We had the good fortune of connecting with Tessa Newton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tessa, what do you attribute your success to?
Believing in yourself and your brand! Not having confidence in myself and my skill set held me back for years. I regret not following this journey sooner, but there is no time like the present to pursue your dreams!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve always had a love for photography, that’s why I pursued my BFA. After graduating I wasn’t happy in my photo editing role at a large company, so I became a nanny. Almost 6 years later, I finally picked up my camera again and started my family photography business! Without the experience of being a nanny, I’m not sure I would have ever leaned into family photography. The bond mothers have with their children is so special and pure. It’s magical. It’s a privilege to be able to capture that!

I won’t lie, starting a business and putting my work out for the world to see was nerve racking. Thankfully my friends, family, and even total strangers have been so supportive! It started as a silly idea and I thought “someday,” but then a few months later I started to actually book paying clients!

It’s been a lot of work, a lot of learning. I still have hurdles to get past, but I’m doing something I never thought I could. I have learned that there really is enough room for everyone in this industry and the photography community in DFW is very supportive!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Anywhere tex-mex! Beto & Son, Mi Cocina, and Chuy’s are all my faves! Shopping in Bishop Arts, kayaking at White Rock Lake, or a staycation at The Joule!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband! He’s always supported me in whatever career path I’ve traveled down. Now he assists me during some of my sessions and I am forever grateful for his love & support!
