Meet Pilar Adara | NYC-based Actor/Producer/Writer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Pilar Adara and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Pilar, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m a NYC-based Actor/Producer/Writer working in TV and Film. Pilar’s Passion is to tell stories that center BIPOC Queer and Trans people. Pilar hopes to create art that will challenge societal norms and work to break the gatekeeping cycle of who is in front of and behind the camera. I was born in Paraguay but I grew up in Atlanta. Atlanta is a city with it’s own cultural identity. The music and art is so engrained in who I am that being an atlien comes across in my filmmaking. From the rhythm of how I write I script to the timing of my humor of something I’m directing you watch my films you know I’m from the A.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
After studying and honing my craft as a performer in Georgia, Florida, and Germany, I moved to New York City to pursue her career in musical theatre. During the Covid lockdown in 2020, I began falling in love with screenwriting and focusing on fusing my love of politics and art. Using the power of storytelling, I hope to create art that will challenge societal norms and work to break the gatekeeping cycle of who is in front of or behind the camera. I want to focus on creating QTBIPOC stories where we are the leads and narrators of our own stories.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well we have to start with history if you’re in NYC! We start with little happy hour at Alibi Lounge. Alibi lounge was the first Black Gay owned bar in Manhattan. It’s an intimate space that’s inclusive of all our siblings and empowers our Black and Brown Queer and Trans community. Then I after a happy hour drink I would have to take my bestie to Pure Thai cookhouse. One of the best Thai spots in the city! Two crab ratchaburi please! Then, have to hit up museum of sex. It’s my favorite place to take people in the city, it’s educational and then there’s 5 floors of hilarious arcade games. After we have a blast there sit in the park and recharge our battery with people watching. Then end the night with the tdf website and see what Broadway show we can see that night for 40 dollars!
That’s the perfect nyc day!

If my best friend is in town for a week?! We’re visiting the met cloisters museum up in Inwood making sure we schedule time to grab a bite at red rooster Harlem, visit museum of natural history, row boats in Central Park. Nowadays night club, Harlem public. The museum of Jazz.

The amazing thing about nyc is we have so many incredible museums and events that are free! I will always stalk eventbrite and find us a free fun adventure.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mom was/is a huge inspiration for me. It wasn’t always easy, but somedays she believes in me more than myself. And I am so lucky because I also have and incredible tribe of friends where we fiercely root for each other. It’s so important to curate a circle of people that can love and support each other because your tribe are going to be the ones that get you through the dark days when things get rough.
