We had the good fortune of connecting with Joanna Rattan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joanna, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
As a child I have always had a creative soul. First I wanted to be a fashion designer, interior designer or landscaper but for my father these careers futureless. That being said I went to collage to become an ESL teacher and gave a “safe” career. I enjoyed teaching but after 14 years I just couldn’t do it anymore. So I had a crazy idea to open a party shop. I researched and found warehouses and started setting it ip in my house. Most of my family thought I went crazy and constantly asked me how will I better myself owning a party shop. After a year I realized that balloon decorating is a thing snd that there were courses. So I took a few and became a certified balloon artist (CBA). This opened a whole new world! I was blown away buy what you can do with balloons. It just went from there I incorporated balloon decorations in my party shop. My customers loved my work and I enjoyed creating balloon decorations for them. Balloons become my passion. After my second divorce I decided to move to Texas in 2018 and started my life over from scratch. I registered my business here and started my balloon business. Shortly after COVID hit and everything crumbled and my business had to be put on hold. I had to find a job to get by this difficult time. After everything reopened I started networking with my business again.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I love that although I make the same garland or columns it is still different every time. The different methods, balloons and styles is incredible. I constantly grow my craft by attending different professional courses as well as give my services to charity. I make my decor with passion and great attention to details. Although I love balloon artistry there are some mistakes I made. One of the biggest is I will never work with the client’s balloons. I buy my balloons from a professional warehouse and they are top quality brands which are durable. Client balloons unfortunately are usually worse value.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well I like small family owned places do I would definitely take them to Lewisville old town as well as the rail district in downtown Frisco. There are so many cute restaurants, coffee shops and bakeries. They are all walking distance and there is a big park as well. I would also take them to the zoo and the gardens. There is also Grandscape in the Colony that has all kinds of events going on at the weekends
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are a few people that I would like to recognize. First are my parents they gave backed me up in my craziness from day one.
My sister supports me as well and sometimes even helps me in my big builds.
My kids support snd help out as well in my business.
