We had the good fortune of connecting with Christina Ibarra and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Christina, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Honestly, you could say there was a lot and nothing going on at the same time, COVID time. The extra spare time gained due to the pandemic allowed me to go back to something I always enjoyed but never had time for, crafting. It started off with vinyl designs on cups, shirts and paper flowers until we landed with our doormats. How doormats? My mom was looking for a doormat to spruce up the front door. While on the hunt for her mat, we noticed one common trend: all the doormats were in English. So, with the extra time I had, I decided to just make her the doormat in Spanish. Something she could understand and something that we hoped would catch the eyes of whoever was visiting and make them ask, “Where did you get your doormat?”. From there, doormats became my favorite thing to do and are now one of the biggest sellers on our website..

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What set’s me apart from others? I paint and design on doormats. I allow others to express themselves and put some of their personality and flair on a canvas that would be seen by guests and makes for a wonderful conversation starter. Before all of this started, I had a dream that I would create something that would be in every household across the U.S. I will continue to work towards that and pursue the dream. It’s been a wild ride to say the least. It hasn’t always been easy, there’s been just as many obstacles as there have been positive moments but, the positive ones outweigh the bad. There have been days when I thought I was in way over my head, but we were able to persevere and build the business to what it is today. Throughout this journey I’ve learned to just keep moving forward. As cliche as it sounds, where there’s a will, there’s a way.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Depends on the season. There’s always sports going on in this city, so for sure on the itinerary we would have a game, Whether it be a Rangers, Cowboys, Mavs or Stars game, there’s always something. There’s always pop ups happening around the city as well. Bishop Arts always has something to offer and what better way to spend your Saturday morning than by supporting other small businesses. As far as food goes, some of my favorite places are Old Monk for brunch, Art Park for a chill vibe and a hangout with friends, Cattleack BBQ if brisket is your thing, or checking out areas like Four Corners Brewery for Loteria Thursday or The Square in Denton which has wonderful little shops and great food areas as well.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My business wouldn’t be where it is today if it weren’t for all of the support I’ve received from family and friends. My mom and now husband have been two of my biggest supporters from day one. Without them both, this probably would have continued being just a dream. They both helped me throughout the beginning stages and motivating me to start and keep going and giving it my all. They have both been my rocks throughout this crazy ride and I have both of them to thank for Sunflare being where it is today. I have many other to thank for being supportive throughout this journey, they know who they are. From providing words of encouragements, ideas, visiting us at pop up events, or even at times bringing food when we’ve been busy at events. Every like, share, comment doesn’t go unnoticed. I am thankful for them and will continue to be thankful.
