We had the good fortune of connecting with Annalise Clayborne, APRN, cPNP and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Annalise, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
After years of trainings, conferences and practice, I figured that there is never a “right” time. Leaving a salaried job was difficult, particularly when starting my own practice meant obtaining loans and less income. But, my husband kept telling me, “if you build it, they will come”. I was not entirely certain whether opening a Pediatric office would be a success or a total bust but I am grateful that others are seeking the very same philosophy that I have when looking for a provider for their children.

What should our readers know about your business?

As long as I can remember, I have wanted to work with children. I have a degree in Child Development but decided to go back to school to obtain my nursing degree and after having children, return for my Master’s in Nursing. Straight out of school, I began working for a well-known pediatric office in McKinney, where I learned how to be a nurse practitioner. Over time, my philosophy on healthcare has changed which led me to leave that practice and work for another practice that focused on a more holistic, alternative view of medicine. I think more about the root cause of disease. We are often caught up in thinking only about treatment x for disease y. While it is important to treat symptoms, if things aren’t improving, then we needed to go back and get a more thorough history and think about what may be causing the symptoms.

I am so passionate about providing holistic healthcare to children through an integrative and functional medical approach. It is not easy as a nurse practitioner to start your own practice, especially in Texas. There are not many resources to assist nurse practitioners. I joined a few Facebook business groups for Nurse Practitioners and the rest of by the grace and direction of God.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Honestly, I like to spend much of my time at home, relaxing and watching a good movie. But, I am a foodie and I love trying new places. There is so many new, trendy restaurants and bars in the DFW. We would probably hit up a new spot and then go uptown for some drinks.

I love brunch time, so in the Harwood District, there is a place called Saint Ann that is cute with a garden-inspired patios or just coffee and donuts at Ascension or Jarams Artisian donut shop.

For some family fun, Farm and Feed in the Shops of Legacy has good food and gaming units the kids can play with a large menu of games on Xbox, Nintendo or PC’s or indoor mini golf at Monster’s Mini Golf in Frisco.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Your support system is everything. The stronger your support system, the more successful you will be. My husband has been my number one supporter of becoming a business owner. But, my interest in functional medicine came from father, who would talk to me about herbal treatments, proper nutrition, etc. as the way to prevent illness and heal disease.

Also, there is truly no “I” in “team.” A winning team consists of strong players. My practice could not succeed without dedicated office staff, specifically, Frashekia Cromer.
