We had the good fortune of connecting with Chonta’ Hickman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chonta’, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I wanted to give others the creative outlet I have to express themselves through fashion.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My brand is called MYSTiiK Styles, which is a custom clothing line that focuses on unique edgy styles. The thing that I believe sets by brand apart from others is that it showcases the sophisticated and spunkiness of my creativity. MYSTiik Styles celebrates the curves of all body types. Although MYSTiiK Styles specializes in ladies apparel, we also create children’s and menswear to help everyone feel their best.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
One place that would be great to see is bicentennial park! The scenery is amazing and there’s so much to do! There’s so many new buildings that have been added so it would definitely be a 2 or 3 day thing. We could walk around the park and check out the scenery and get nice pictures and grab a bite to eat at one of the restaurants there. Depending on the weather we could either go play where the water works are or go to the museum! Lastly there’s the stadium right next to the park we could walk over and see a cool ball game.

Also depending on the weather and time of year the Gaylord Opryland hotel and mall is also a 2 or 3 day thing. You could check out Opryland mall to shop and go to their variety of restaurants located inside. Opryland hotel has beautiful scenery also. If it’s winter or Christmas time you can see the ice event there and the beautiful lights and tree outside. They also have a cool water park inside the hotel that’s usually open year round.

I would also introduce them to some of my colleagues and friends I’ve met in the fashion industry and take them to a few fashion events so they are able to see a little bit of what I do.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Rakia Johnson, owner of Raki & Ruth was a big help to me getting started in the industry. She’s become someone I think of as a mentor and someone I can go to for advice as I continue to grow in my craft.
