We had the good fortune of connecting with Tabitha O’Connor and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tabitha, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve been a stay at home mom for most of my adult life. Having two sons on the autism spectrum, one with serious behavior issues, made returning to the traditional work force a difficult proposition. I’ve been a baker since before I had kids. Turning baking into a business from home seemed like a natural way to keep my creative outlet open while helping to contribute to our household budget.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Desserts from the Heart is as much a ministry as it is a bakery. Every order is an opportunity to bring joy into someone’s life. In a world where budgets are stretching tighter every day and families are having to make tough decisions about how to spend precious dollars, I strive to be a baker who meets people where they are. I can’t give away every cake, and some of the most intricate masterpieces are beyond my skill set, but I can design a lovely, tasty centerpiece for most celebrations that meets the needs of families with limited means.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The Stockyards in Fort Worth are a must visit. The Herd happens twice a day every day, and there are lots of restaurants and shops in the area that highlight the old west culture of the area. The Water Gardens in downtown are a tranquil place to take a few pictures, and the Fort Worth Zoo is amazing. The Will Rogers Memorial Center in the heart of the Cultural District has events from gun shows to rodeos to arts exhibitions year round. There’s always something to do in Fort Worth.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would not be where I am without the love and support of my husband, Patrick. He has encouraged my creativity, helped me think outside the box on specific projects, and fully enabled my baking addiction. He’s my biggest cheerleader when I am struggling and my number one delivery driver regardless of the destination. I love you forever, Beloved.
