We had the good fortune of connecting with Johanna White and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Johanna, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
Absolutely! I think one of the most common misconceptions about the photography industry is what it actually entails. There’s so much more that goes into creating lasting and memorable art than simply taking a “good” picture. So much time, skill and effort goes into planning, designing, photographing and retouching images, and only 10 % of that is actually taking the picture.
I specialize in high quality art printed on large canvases and heirloom albums intended to be passed on decades later to children and grandchildren. I spend several hours planning and designing each session, and several more retouching images to perfection to ensure they are worthy to display in your home. I also prepare each image for the lab they’ll be printed through, the size and medium that they’ll be printed on, and where they’ll be displayed.
In a world where a lot of people are only taking pictures on their phone and applying instagram filters, it’s not uncommon for individuals to oversimplify all that professional photography is and does. It can be easy to misunderstand the value on the amount of time, skill and experience dedicated to perfecting high quality, heirloom art designed to last decades if you’ve never experienced the difference for yourself first-hand.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Sure! I am a full service, published, fine art photographer specializing in maternity and posed newborn photography in Decatur, TX. I absolutely love designing, planning, and creating authentic and memorable sessions. I am every mom’s “hype-girl” and cheerleader, drawing out those beautiful genuine smiles and “big heart” moments between family members. I love taking those raw images and transforming them into bold, emotion-filled, tangible art unique to each family that will be cherished for generations.
In a world where families are primarily enjoying their images in a digital format, I believe in the difference that printed art can make in each family’s home. Displaying images in our homes in a way that our children can readily see them everyday creates an important atmosphere of safety and belonging. The art in your home is a daily reminder to yourself, your spouse, and your children- You are loved. You matter. You are beautiful and valued. You belong. This is home. What could be more beautiful or valuable? There are few things more fulfilling than playing a small part in a family’s legacy.
It has been an incredible journey these past few years, juggling being a mom to our three young children (that we also homeschool), and starting and maintaining a business. Balancing time and resources has definitely been a learning curve, as well as always investing in education and our studio. However, I have been blessed to have incredible mentors, family, friends and wonderful clients along side me, and it has made all the difference.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We absolutely love our home town of Decatur, TX. It’s a small town at it’s finest with all of the fun, family friendly festivals and parades regularly occurring around downtown Decatur.
If you visit, you should definitely start the morning off at Good Morning Donuts for a couple sausage kolaches (they are the best), and then enjoy a stroll down Main St. Be sure to grab a coffee at Trinity Street Roastaraunt Coffee Bar. I always say the atmosphere is like ‘Friends’ meets ‘How I Met Your Mother’. Their coffee is on point, and you can usually catch a live event from trivia night to live music. The boutique shops never disappoint, and don’t leave without trying a slice of pizza from State St. Pizza.
For more a more ‘city’ experience, I’d be sure to visit The Stockyards and Billybob’s in Fort Worth for souvenirs, a few good drinks, bull riding, concerts and line dancing. We also always love the family-owned feel of Green Tea House in Alliance Town Center for their sushi and egg drop soup. You won’t be disappointed!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Gaby Chung. Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge and experience and continually giving back. Your programs and support have been life changing, and continue to elevate our industry.
