We had the good fortune of connecting with Lex Marie and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lex, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
My love of art started at a very early age. Growing up in New Orleans I spent a lot of time with my great-grand aunt who always encouraged my creativity. Anytime I would draw a picture she would proudly display it along the largest wall in her house. She always seemed excited to show everyone what I made. As I got older, art became an escape for me. It’s where I found my peace. It didn’t initially start off as a career aspiration, but the more I began to share this piece of myself with the world, the more I wanted to pursue a career in art.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My culture inspires my art. From hip-hop music to Black classic movies I grew up watching, I like to capture the feelings of a moment. It’s how I express myself and my emotions at any given time. I’m proud that I’ve stepped of my comfort zone and started trying new techniques when creating.

I thank God for allowing me to grow to where I am today and blessing me with an amazing support system. I used to be afraid of sharing my pieces until my best friend motivated me to showcase my art in a local show and from there my confidence grew.

Throughout this process, I’ve learned that consistency is key and if I give up I’ll never know what I’m capable of.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
On Friday we’d have to have lunch at Hattie B’s in Deep Ellum then later we’d definitely hit a Vibes Texas event. Saturday night we’ll be at a Creator’s Don’t Die party. And for Sunday brunch, we’d go listen to DJ Swerva at Brunch & Chill. We’ll always be seen at an Art Baes event whenever they have one in Dallas.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My daughter Asia. She has been my biggest supporter in everything I’ve done. She encourages me when I feel like giving up. Her love and laughter brings so much happiness into my life. She’s my greatest blessing.
