We had the good fortune of connecting with Westonn and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Westonn, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. I’ve dealt with depression since I was a teenager and it bled into my adult life. Once I confronted it and begun to unpack my trauma my life truly began to get brighter and opportunities would start to appear that I never thought I was good enough to receive. It constantly reminds me that if you keep going, the storm will eventually end and the fact that you are on the other side of it says so much about who you are. Even if you had to crawl through it.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Most people who listen to my music say it’s “vibey.” I intentionally choose the music I put out to create an atmosphere that has space and makes you feel something. Only a couple of people knew this but I was chosen as one of the National Anthem singers for the Dallas Mavericks back in June. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, those plans are currently on hold. I never thought I would get an opportunity like that this early in my career but it has given me an immense amount of confidence and encouragement in who I am as a singer/artist. I’ve always been a dreamer and I’ve always been ambitious in my life. When I was in college I tried the YouTube cover thing and I hated singing other people’s songs so a few years later I started making songs on my iPhone 4s using the Garageband app (they were terrible). Then I began to work on my songwriting and left the beat making to the professionals. Since then I’ve been constantly self-teaching myself to improve my singing and technique and make songs that will sound good years from now. My biggest challenge is confidence and I am constantly getting more and more of it. The thing about pursuing your art as a profession is the ups and downs and not paying attention to what people say or don’t say. It’s all on you and as long as you always believe in yourself even when it’s hard and make the art that fills you up you will continue to love what you do until that day it becomes a full-time career. Life is too short not to be the best at what you do so just do it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’ll start with where to eat because anyone who knows me knows I enjoy my food lol. Brick & Bones in Deep Ellum has the most delicious jalapeño biscuts and gravy and their fried chicken is so good. For dessert we’d have to hit up Joy Macarons in Lower Greenville, their macarons are perfection, they even have a macaron ice cream sandwich! A night out would have to include hitting up a few bars up and down Deep Ellum. High & Tight Barbershop is a barbershop in the front and a speakeasy bar/stage in the back. Off The Record is a record shop turned into a bar/dance spot. They always have dope DJs spinning and I never leave there without having a good time dancing and hanging out. After a long night out I would recommend heading to Klyde Warren park, they’ve got food trucks and it’s a great spot to people watch and enjoy an afternoon. Dallas has and continues to grow so there’s always something going on.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have been blessed to have amazing people in my life who constantly support me and even help me with opportunities and that’s never lost on me. Billy Law is an amazing human/musician. He plays bass in Ottoman Turks and his band Billy Law. My good friend Hailey Good who is one of the best singers in Dallas, makes me want to be a better singer and I feel honored that we are each other’s peers as well as friends. Finally, my friends and family that support my dream and come to my shows. It means so much and I can’t wait until they get to come to my sold-out shows one day.
