We had the good fortune of connecting with Vicky Avelar and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Vicky, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
I am inspired by leadership. About a month ago, God helped me realize that my older brother, Edgar, who was recently called home, was my greatest/most special supporter. Making him my greatest source of inspiration. Edgar was a great leader, his passion and ability to get me to do something out of my comfort zone really was amazing, and I will forever cherish him for that. He was that “little push” you need when you know you want to do something but won’t without that little bit of support. I am also inspired by my hard working dad, who is always working and has always worked so hard to give us a good life. He makes me want to be better, and inspires me to work hard in order to achieve my goals. The unconditional love and support he continues to show me are an inspiration.

What should our readers know about your business?
I’ve been into baking since I was about 13 years of age. The first desserts I learned to make were pineapple upside down cakes & chocoflanes alongside my mama, who is in heaven. Thanks to my husband ,who out of nowhere decided to promote my cakes at his job, I decided to start Cakes by Vicky about 6 years ago when my oldest son was just 2 years old, in our small one bedroom duplex. I started by offering chocoflanes & fondant cakes because I hated working buttercream. Now, I realize I was just afraid of buttercream, as I hadn’t taught myself how to work with it or what the consistency of it was supposed to be. I’ve learned a lot of caking tips & techniques by watching YouTube videos, shoutout to those willing to teach what they know. Fast forward to a few years later, I LOVE working with all buttercream cakes, they are, by-far, my favorite orders to fulfill.

Mommin’ & cakin’ has not been easy, it has taken a lot of love & patience along with tears and sleepless nights. I wouldn’t change my journey for anything in this world, as that is how I got to where I am today, by putting my trust in Gods timing and plan, by not giving up, and getting up every morning to keep working towards my dreams. Doing it all to show my three babies to never give up and chase their dreams.

I’m excited for what God has in store for my business, the new items that I will soon be offering and other small projects that are in the works. I am stoked about being back in my hometown, Fort Worth, TX! My family moved to Alvarado three & a half years ago, since then my kids and I have driven back and forth to deliver cakes almost daily and that was definitely draining. Giving up was never an option, fulfilling my loyal customers orders was a must. I couldn’t just stop, you know? All I can say is that God’s timing is perfect! I mean, not driving 35 mins and having customers pick up at my place, ahhh! I’m thrilled!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Christmas time is here, my favorite time of the year! We would go to Prairie Lights in Grand Prairie, Texas, to drive through and see all of the beautiful holiday lights, take pictures of the kiddos with Santa, and walk through the forest! We would end the night by getting some drinks at Yucatán taco stand.

It is pumpkin patch season, drive a little further south and end up at one of the pumpkin patches (Mainstay, Country Critters) pick out a pumpkin, take all of the cute fall photos with the babies, pet the animals at the petting zoo, & catch a hay ride! By night, end up having drinks at Yucatan Taco Stand over in the hospital district on Magnolia St. Order their Tequila Lime Chicken nachos(drool) & sip on a Frozen strawberry margarita or a ‘Threesome’. Stop by Sundace Square for some dinner at Risky’s BBQ, maybe catch a movie at AMC, and just take a stroll around downtown Fort Worth. If it’s Friday, Saturday, or Sunday you may catch some live music on the plaza stage. If there’s still room for dessert after dinner, do yourself a favor and swing by Melt for some delicious ice cream!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Oh, yes! My family, of course! My older brother, who recently passed away, my dad, husband & children. They have always been the ones to push me to do everything having to do with caking. From fixing my broken oven when I was just starting out 6 years ago, to gifting me my first KitchenAid mixer. My older brother, Garo, who was my #1 and most special supporter, was always in the loop about how many orders I had to fulfill during the week, always made sure I knew where I was going when a delivery had to be made, but most importantly pushed me to take on orders & projects that I was too afraid to take on. I will forever cherish him & I thank God for his time on this earth.
