We had the good fortune of connecting with Troy Tippawang And Hannah Abercrombie and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Troy Tippawang and Hannah Abercrombie, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
We both grew up in the North Texas area, playing in ensembles and taking music lessons all over the metroplex. We met at SMU (pony up!) while pursuing undergraduate and master’s degrees in piano and bass performance/pedagogy, and then we got married a few years later! Every day, we think not only about the lessons in music we learned from our favorite teachers, but also about the ways we can be kind and supportive, like them. The relationship between a music teacher and student is incredibly special; we’re honored to be entrusted with people’s music education!
We founded our own LLC in order to provide the very best music instruction we can. Being business owners not only has perks for us (like controlling our own schedules and incomes), but also perks for our students. We are able to work directly with families on making the very best musical choices for their students, and we can provide exciting performance opportunities for them when they’re ready! We have the best job in the world!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
As DFW natives, we feel blessed to be living and working in the Allen/Plano area, offering top-notch music instruction and having fun while doing it! Business-wise and financially, we discovered that operating as an LLC is a must as self-employed musicians. Another related piece of advice: hire an accountant – it’s so worth it! Finally, we have found that it’s important to stay in touch with your why. We love sharing music with students, teaching them how to independently enjoy and create music for the rest of their lives! Playing music ourselves on a regular basis, both professionally and just for fun, keeps us rooted in that why.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As students at SMU, we went to the Dallas Arboretum and Dallas Symphony Orchestra concerts all the time and loved it – we still do these things as often as we can! Closer to our current home in Allen, we enjoy Armor Brewing Company, Cafe Promenade, and the Downtown McKinney square. Oak Point Nature Preserve in Plano is a lovely spot for a stroll, too!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The time we spent in lessons with our professors at SMU, Tom Lederer and Carol Leone, was essential to becoming the musicians we are today. Russ and Anne Abercrombie, Hannah’s parents, are the best parents we could ask for. Their support means the world to us – it really makes this all possible! Finally, a shoutout to our kids, who fill our lives with joy and love. They motivate us to be the best humans (and musicians!) we can be.
