We had the good fortune of connecting with Tommy Nee and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tommy, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
I recently just started my own company called Sun Potions. We produce a Sustainable, Reef Safe, and Organic sunscreen. I think a lot of people are unaware of the dangers of conventional sunscreens. The active ingredients are terrible for your body and disrupt your hormones, but they’re also really bad for the Earth and harm all kinds of marine life.

For my job as a Cinematographer & Photographer, I travel quite a bit, often to hot, tropical locations. I was going through so much Reef Safe sunscreen that I decided to start making my own. What began as a way to save some money has totally snowballed into lots of research and learning how to develop a safe and effective sunscreen.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business, Sun Potions, produces Sustainable, Reef Safe, Organic SPF 40 Sunscreen. It’s handmade locally in Dallas, Texas in small batches. I started making my own sunscreen just for personal use about a year ago. Four months ago or so my girlfriend convinced me to start selling it and I have to say, I’ve been having a ton of fun making it, testing it, marketing it, shooting content, and just enjoying the process.

I’m really excited to see how Sun Potions can grow. There’s a huge market out there for affordable and sustainable products so I’m eager to see how things will shake out as we gain a larger following.

I’m passionate about sustainable products so having a business that’s also sustainable has been incredibly rewarding. I love spending time outdoors whether I’m hiking, surfing, exercising or just hanging out by the pool so creating and manufacturing a product that I also use and believe in is really important to me.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For a drink, I love Tiny Victories in Oak Cliff. They make an incredible Corpse Reviver #2 and have a great happy hour.

For dinner we’re heading to EL Come Taco and then we’ll wash it down with Ranch Water from La Viuda Negra. We’ll also have a dinner at Zatar for Lebanese food, Sa Sa Sushi, and we’ll probably hit Jimmy’s Food Store for some sandwiches.

Anytime a friend comes to town we usually go to the Dallas Arboretum if the weather’s nice. I also love hanging out at Fraternal Order of the Eagles pool on a hot day.

The Balcony Club in Lakewood is a great spot for some live music. I think they have live music 7 days a week.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
