We had the good fortune of connecting with The Black Boy King and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi King, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Work life balance is extremely important. But no more important than the goal. I believe you have to have a purpose so large that you are willing to put the work in consistently to try to be the best you can be. Like, you can’t stop thinking about it until you hit the goal. And when you do, you set a new one. That’s actually what king life is all about. Holding yourself to a higher standard. I try to vacation as much as I can in different places and experience many different things and I feel it’s important to blow off steam. I love going to Mexico. I love traveling and the experience. For a lot of people their work won’t allow them to take time off or have that sort of benefit so they have to find productive and healthy ways to balance their minds. So the goal’s got to be to find a way out of the rat race. For me, it’s all about coming closer to God, myself, and my purpose. This gives me the energy to continue forward.

It hasn’t changed over the years for me. When I was young I didn’t have the opportunity to vacation or blow off steam somewhere because we were in constant survival mode. When I was in high school, I did what I had to do to get out and leave Las Vegas and now as I’m older, I’m willing to do what it takes to succeed at my goals. The road to success is not easy and can’t take too much time off if you haven’t hit your goals. You have to surround yourself with people that understand this and aren’t lazy. Even if they don’t have their own dreams and goals, they can still play a major part if they are supportive and motivating of your own goals, ya’ dig. They can play a negative part too if they are lazy they will cause you to be lazy and then resent you if you don’t go along with it. Or they hate because of your abilities and opportunities. So it’s definitely a balance.

I’ve worked very hard so I do like to relax, have a good time, enjoy myself. But then it’s back to business.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Kingdom House Records is the name of my business and I’m the main artist, The Black Boy King, and I founded this label about a decade ago. I record and produce all of my music from my studio, collaborating with other artists and production virtually if and when I can’t travel. I built the studio from scratch, all self taught. I’ve written over 150 songs, produced 55 songs and have released 9 singles so far with my most successful single, “Eat It Up’ to date hitting number 1 on the Spotify Local Pulse Charts in 2022, and it just surpassed 100,000 streams on Spotify.

This year will be even bigger for us as we have singles coming with major artists. My next single “Can Do” features multi-platinum performing artist Sean Kingston. And I’m so fortunate to work with amazing producers like Anno Domini and Mr. Mig. Mig has worked with literal legends of music like Beyonce and Usher and is 40x platinum as a producer & engineer. So we are very excited for what’s in store for Kingdom House this year moving forward.

It hasn’t been easy at all. As an independent artist, I am responsible for literally every aspect of this business. With it being the music business makes it even difficult because we put in thousands of hours of work and still have to wait to be paid royalties and stuff. Also, we’re up against the power and money of the major labels. A lot of artists stop chasing their dreams when they realize how difficult it is. How you have to not only make great music, but market and network it extremely well. That’s why the saying is 80% of this is business and 20% is talent.

I thank the world for allowing me to share my story with them and that’s what makes this all worth it. Kingdom House is about understanding how blessed you are to be alive, achieve your goals and forging your own path with a rulership mentality. It’s not about ruling over others, it’s about ruling over yourself.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Dallas is an amazing city and I’ve always been impressed by it’s many things to eat, see and do. If it was a female coming to see me, I’d set us up in the Zaza in Uptown or The Joule, then have dinner at The Monarch on the 49th floor and have an amazing meal. Then the next day we’d hit up the State Fair and have a ball, check out Deep Ellum at night, you know what time it is.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shout out to God, my family, my boy Mark Austin who’s been down since day one, Curt Flo- who gave me the inspiration, the production team Anno Domini and Oli Temper, the whole Kingdom House team. And if I missed anyone, I love you.
