We had the good fortune of connecting with Tashi Richards and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tashi, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Before I started TLC I always supported black owned businesses. I’m big on helping my community thrive in new ways and giving them a helping hand when it comes to funding their business or promotions. Then I started to think “What is something I could do to help myself?”. After the passing of Nipsey Hussle the drive to help myself and community hit harder. Subsequently Tashi’s Lawn Care was created! Nipsey always spoke about ownership, and helping each other become bigger than our surroundings. I went in with no expectations, I just knew I wanted something to call my own that could be passed down to my family and children..

What should our readers know about your business?
Tashi’s Lawn Care is the only lawn care service in the metroplex owned and operated by a woman. It gives me so much pride saying that! Going into a male dominated industry is never easy because the odds are already stacked against us as women. Knowing the path I wanted to take wasn’t the easiest, I taught myself everything there was to know about lawn care and landscaping. Which climate zones were where, the best treatments for climates as hot as Texas, more efficient techniques on jobs, proper tools to use, certifications needed, expenses, concrete skills and so much more. It hasn’t been a walk in the park, but I’d rather create for myself instead of working for someone. Being a entrepreneur is rewarding on good and bad days to me because it still gives you the sense of freedom. I learned that everything you do or don’t do is solely on you, so the benefits are endless when you have the drive to keep going. Consistency is the only thing between me and my dreams, every time something gets harder I know I’m getting closer to achieving my goal. Nothing comes easy, and if it does it’s temporary.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m not huge on the party side but I love outdoor sports or anything to get the adrenaline going. I would probably take them kayaking, art exhibitions, gun range, and my favorite vegan restaurants (Bam’s Vegan in Irving and Nuno’s Tacos in Dallas)!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’m grateful to have been inspired by the late and great Nipsey Hussle, following his philosophy and courage to take a different route. As well as my beautiful mother Miracle Nelson, who has always been my biggest cheerleader when it comes to anything I’ve done. The lessons and strength she’s instilled in me have shown throughout my life in many ways. It has helped keep my heart pure during trying times and given me the motivation to continue in my business.
