We had the good fortune of connecting with Savannah Sweeting and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Savannah, what inspires you?
I take inspiration from the things I grew up eating and from my Southern roots. From holiday meals, summer barbeques, to just a good old-fashioned family dinner, many of my family traditions are tied to food. Growing up in a large boisterous and very Southern family we took pride in passing on techniques and recipes from one generation to another. For example, a variety if not all my recipes have stemmed from written recipes my grandmother gave to me.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Something Sweet started in the midst of the pandemic a few years ago. I was working in the medical field and found myself fatigued, stressed, and quite frankly scared. The only time I found solace was while I was baking and eventually, I began creating cookie “care packages” for my friends and loved ones. With the encouragement of these same people, I decided to take a step back and see if I could really pursue something in baking. Needless to say, I haven’t looked back since and it’s been quite the journey.
As someone who has no prior business experience, there were numerous challenges I faced. I’ve learned the importance of asking questions, doing your research, and not being afraid to ask for help. Additionally, I would say it’s important to be open and accepting of feedback and critique as well.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Dallas has so many unique places to eat, explore, and enjoy. Some of my food recommendations include Marianna’s Taco Shop (Frisco), Legacy Food Hall (Plano), Roots Southern Table (Farmer’s Branch), and Pangea (Garland). Dallas also offers a host of activities and cool places to check out. A few of my recommendations include BlackLit (Addison), Frisco Fresh Market (Frisco), In Living Colour Studio (Addison), Nerdvana (Frisco), and Asia Times Square (Grand Prairie).
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, I want to recognize and give gratitude to my father. He instilled in me a love for cooking and always had a willingness to pass his knowledge down to me. Although he has since passed, each and every dessert I bake I do to honor his legacy and keep his memory alive. I’d also like to express gratitude to my fiance Joseph and my sister Chanette. They have been a never-ending source of support and have continuously believed in both myself and my business. Lastly, I’d like to thank my customers! They are the backbone of my business and I’ve been so incredibly overwhelmed with how supportive they’ve been.
