We had the good fortune of connecting with Ruth Trevino and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ruth, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
This process was very long for me. At the time that my mentality started changing, I was actually working for a very successful mobile grooming company. I truly loved working there. Yet, I always knew that it was not enough. I knew that it was not the end of my journey or process as a groomer. I always spoke about starting my own business, but in all those years of me saying that to myself it was just “talk”. The truth was that I did not consider myself intelligent enough, or knowledgeable enough to start my own business. I thought I didn’t have what it takes. One day as I was grooming in the back of the van for the company that I used to work for, it just hit me. I knew that I could do it. It was because I realized my true value and I was done looking at myself as worthless. I got rid of the fear and decided to expand in the career that I love and am passionate about. I want to set a new standard for groomers. Groomers who not only know how to “groom”, but have an amazing connection and communication skills with the pets. It’s something that has to be learned. In this way, grooming can be enjoyable for the pets as well! You have to have the patience and that extra doggie sense to understand them and cater to their need. This is what I believe the mentality of every groomer should be. I know that I believe that I can offer this passion and skill to the grooming industry.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I truly love and enjoy the artistic side of grooming. Every single groom is different and every single pet gets a different haircut. Some end up looking like teddy bears, others get very angular haircuts. It’s all different and I enjoy working with my scissors. But the area where I truly take pride in is the communication with each and every pet. I truly love that I can start grooming a pet who has issues let’s say with their nails getting done. After some time of me working with them and training them, they eventually understand whats happening and they trust me to do a good job. They will no longer fight me or try to run away. They get used to the process. Sometimes it takes me 2 or 3 times and other times it takes me years. But the end result is what is truly rewarding. This is something that took me a very long time to learn, through practice and patience. It’s like learning doggie language and understanding how to communicate back. It was not easy to learn. Sometimes I would just stop grooming and cry. I think every groomer can relate this! It’s a career that really works your patience. I’ve truly learned that every dog is different and you cannot treat every pet the same. I’ve also learned that in this industry, you are always learning. There is something from every single groomer that you can learn. That’s what will make you a good groomer. What I would like for everyone to understand and know is that grooming is much more than just getting “Fluffy” his haircut. It’s about trust, training, and building a relationship with a pet. Grooming is about making their lives better physically and mentally. Every pet deserves that. That’s what my brand is about. That’s what my story has grown into.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m going to be a little rebel and change this question a bit… hahaha… I would take my friend to a vacation in Colorado! I am absolutely in love with Colorado. I have actually taken a lot of people. A few family members and church family members. They all loved it! There is just something about being in nature that I truly love and enjoy. I love going on crazy difficult hikes and dragging every person I take! I also make sure to take my guitar every single time. I usually play outside and enjoy the scenery as I sing and play. I always get a fire going at night with some s’mores. The best spot in Colorado to me is Frisco and Silverthorn! I love the taste of the foods! For some reason the food tastes different than Texas food. There is nothing more beautiful to me than to just gaze at the mountains and enjoying the outdoors with friends and family!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I will always be very thankful to Kelly and Alex Pelsang who pushed me to become a groomer. To the Academy at Petsmart. That is where I got my start. To every single groomer that I have learned from; Carly, Bre, Rachel, Mallory, Janie, Monze, Jenny. You guys are amazing groomers. and taught me so much, Thank you all.
