We had the good fortune of connecting with Robin Garrett and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Robin, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I feel the success of my business has stemmed from our relentless commitment to high quality at an affordable price. We have strong relationships with our various nursery growers that have lasted for over a decade now. They grow only the best in terms of beautiful plants and flowers and once in our facility, my staff and I do everything in our power to maintain the same quality that they arrived with so our customer is buying truly healthy and cared for plant products. The same goes for our eclectic home goods and decor. I hand select only items I personally love and would have in my own home. This individualized attention flows into the vibe of our store and gives our customers a true sense of confidence that they are shopping somewhere that believes in their merchandise. We are eager to share our passion for detail and want our customers to be able to afford our products, so we diligently maintain comfortable price points.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I was a single mom of two infants in my 20’s. I worked multiple jobs simultaneously, trying to make ends meet, yet never could quite introduce those two ends to each other. 😉 In the next couple decades, I remarried and worked for some major corporations but the entrepreneurial spirit was always on my mind. It wasn’t until my late 40’s that I took the leap and started my own business. I bootstrapped my startup as soon as I quickly became frustrated with the red tape of getting a business loan. Without an ounce of retail background or education, I simply began my store with the knowledge of being the consumer for so many years and knowing how I liked to be treated and the feeling I liked to get from frequenting a local shop. I have kept that basic concept first and foremost in mind as our business has grown and our reputation has evolved.

Every day I find myself using skills from each of the many jobs I’ve had over my life, but the biggest skill/lesson I have learned is to follow my gut. I think the transparency and the authenticity of my small business is what draws people in. It is such a buzzword these days to give shoppers the “experience”, and I just laugh because that has been my M.O. before it was a catchphrase. Owning a business is never 100% smooth sailing but I just listen to my heart, use my head and more times than not, we get through any difficulties. Our store is a place to feel comfortable ~ a destination, if you will. So many customers tell me they came just because they need a break, or for some relief from the crazy world right now. That is my biggest compliment. If they buy something, bonus!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well clearly, we would hang out at Oopsy Daisy! haha But if we had a whole week together, I would plan a visit to the Dallas Arboretum, a day out at Canton First Monday Trade Days, a great concert up at Choctaw, some r and r spa time, and a lot of wine-sipping chill girlfriend chit chat around the fire pit enjoying my beautiful back yard.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband is my biggest cheerleader and encourages me daily to succeed!

I had two other small business owners (whom I really didn’t even know all that well) that each went out of their way to take time and share tips, tricks and what-not-to-do’s when I reached out to them years ago as I was starting out.

Paula Marvin from Rosemary and Thyme in Exeter, CA and Ron Carlock from Ron’s in Grover Beach, CA both graciously gave me great insight and answered a ton of questions over the phone, taking precious time away from their own busy days. I will never forget their generosities in selflessly helping a newbie in the retail business.
