We had the good fortune of connecting with Robert Dye and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Robert, why did you pursue a creative career?
When a brush loaded with paint touches the canvas there is a moment when the commonplace reaches for the devine. Sometimes we may get close. Rarely there is perfection, but the potential for perfection is there if we are willing to try.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have always been attacted to the observation of nature. In my plein air oils and watercolors I try to capture something that I am experiencing in the observation of nature. I try to repsond to a unique sense of light, time and space in every plein air painting. These observations are the building blocks of the larger studio paintings. In my larger studio paintings, I try to push the painting to a place where it has its own life and energy. A successful studio painting is one that has outgrown my ability to prepare and plan. It has become a unique result of the reach toward the devine.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to the art museums, the Kimbell and the DMA, the Nasher and the Crow Museum. We would visit some restaurants on Lower Greenville and take a walk along White Rock Lake.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I had wonderfu training at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. I was allowed, encouraged and required to give everything I had to painting. I had wonderful teachers. They are with me every day. And I also had the desire and strength to grow beyond my student years and to push my painting to new places. I dont know where that desire and strength came from, but it has always felt to me like painting is a spiritual calling. For that I can only give credit to God for bringing me to the place that I needed to be.
