We had the good fortune of connecting with Rebecca Carrell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rebecca, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
We moved approximately every three years while I was growing up, so early on, I learned how to approach people and start conversations. Because we usually moved to different states/regions of the US, I also developed a natural curiosity about people and their life experiences.
In 1992 I enrolled at the University of Kansas with an emphasis on broadcast journalism. That led to 23 years in radio (20 of those years in morning radio) and an ongoing weekly podcast.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m most known for my career in radio, second for speaking and teaching. I started in radio in Dallas/Fort Worth in 1998 and hopped from 92.5, 570 KLIF, to 99.5 the Wolf. In 2001, Dean James from KSCS hired me to join the Dorsey Gang, and I left, feeling called into ministry, in 2011. Just a few months later, 90.9 KCBI called, looking for a part-time morning host to fill in when the morning team was out. The part-time work led to full-time morning show hosting, and I spent the next decade waking up our listeners and encouraging them with the hope of Christ.
In 2015, I began working toward my Master’s at Dallas Theological Seminary. The door opened for me to join the staff with the hope of becoming faculty once I complete my doctoral studies. In the meantime, I write, podcast, teach the Bible, and speak at conferences locally and nation-wide
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The Dallas-Fort Worth area has so much to offer! I might start in the Bishop Arts Disctrict, head over to the Dallas Museum of Art, and perhaps finish with dinner in Sundance Square. If it’s football season, we’re going to cheer on my beloved Cowboys in Arlington. If it’s the heat of summer, we may road trip to New Braunfels and float the river. We would also spend considerable time in my own town of Flower Mound, shopping and dining at the Shops of Highland Village. Mexican Food—probably from Mi Cocina—would be high on the list.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mom saw abilities in me years before I ever did. It was at her urging I studied broadcast journalism and applied at radio stations in the Dallas/Fort Worth area after college. She also told me I would write books one day and teach in higher education (I am currently co-teaching classes at Dallas Theological Seminary while pursuing my doctorate). I owe another shoutout to Smokey Rivers at 99.5 the Wolf. He hired me with little experience and spent many hours mentoring and training me. It was during that period I learned an important life principle: talent may get you in the door, but the secret to longevity is teachability and hard work.
I own another shoutout to Mark “Hawkeye” Louis and the late Terry Dorsey. They brought me on their show in 2001 and taught me how to make others the star. I learned more from my ten years on the Dorsey Gang than anywhere else.
I credit where I am now to Dr. Sue Edwards, Dr. Sandra Glahn, Dr. Joye Baker, and Dr. Reg Grant. Each of them has spent time pouring into me, sharpening my skills, and modeling integrity and spiritual maturity.
