We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Wheeler and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rachel, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I have worked in the food/restaurant industry since I was 14. I have always had a passion for baking and pastry, but learned early on that most pastry positions do not pay very well if you do not own your own business. After a few years of working in the industry, I started struggling with keeping motivation. It is hard to keep motivation when you have to follow and fit into someone else’s dream. I decided to venture out and start making cakes and other pastries on my own. I learned that being your own boss gives you a whole new level of self expression and motivation that is so rewarding. My true goal is to continue to make a business that I can be proud of.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Since I was little, I always loved anything that allowed me to show my artistic side. When I started to get into making custom cakes, I realized how much artistic ability it truly takes. It is not as easy as just frosting a cake. Some cakes requires sculpting little fondant decorations and frosting intricate designs. With every cake I do, I learn something new. There is challenges with each cake I make, that help prepare me for the future. Although it can be very difficult and frustrating in the moment, I continue to persevere because in the end I know I am gaining more knowledge to make each cake I do better than the last one. I want the world to know that I truly put my passion into everything I make.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of my favorite scenic places to check out would be Red Rocks Amphitheatre at sunrise or sunset because the views are amazing. You can also enjoy some nice concerts up there surrounded by all the rocks. The Denver Botanic Gardens is another cool scenic place to check out a variety of plants. It is a nice peaceful place to go to read a book or just enjoy the atmosphere. There is too many good restaurants to name all, but I can think of a few off the top of my head. Avanti Food & Beverage is a collective eatery with multiple options of diverse food to try all located in one place. They also have a great rooftop patio! I would also make sure to take my friend to the Denver Aquarium, as it is a fun place to go and also has a restaurant inside where you can be surrounded by the fish!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give recognition to all my former chefs/bosses along the way that noticed my potential and took time to teach me what they knew. It has taken many years of trial and error to get the knowledge I have gained from working with other great mentors.
