We had the good fortune of connecting with Pranav Ranganath and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Pranav, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind the success of my business is perseverance. In this context, perseverance doesn’t just mean working through hard times. The foundation of perseverance consists of dedication, consistency, and most importantly genuine passion in my work. Dedication is very straightforward. Time, energy, and resources have to be invested into anything you do. Consistency is key to a healthy business. Posting regularly, interacting with clients, and having a planned schedule for anything you do. Most importantly, passion. This comes from the heart, and it cannot be mimicked or faked. Without it, everything fails. You must be invested and love what you do.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I believe that my photography is very unique. I have my own editing styles and I try to be creative even during formal sessions. To get to where I am today, I had to do free sessions and give away my time to earn exposure. It wasn’t easy because I am also a college student studying Biomedical Engineering. Starting a business while being a full time student is a challenge, both financially and mentally. Many times, I was getting less than 3-4 hours of sleep per day due to the amount of difficult classes, studying needed, and the number of clients I was booking. To overcome these challenges, I had a very rigorously planned schedule to meet the demands and be successful at both school and business. I’ve learned two very important lessons along the way. First, every individual is unique and it is very important to adjust to their needs when it comes to photography. Something that looks good to you may not be something that looks good to another person. It is important for both parties to agree on what looks best. Secondly, people will take advantage of you if you let them. I am very understanding and will go to many lengths for a client to be happy and to get the pictures they want. However, this kindness was sometimes taken advantage of. I would never expect anyone to pay for a little extra time, and then that would turn into a lot of extra time that I never got paid for. Yes, it happens. Yes, it’s hard to politely ask to be paid for the extra time sometimes. It’s one of my main weaknesses, but I’ve worked on being more stern with my leniency in order to prevent being taken advantage of.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are SO many awesome places for taking pictures around Dallas! A nice place to start would be the Fabrication Yard for some urban style pictures. One of my favorite restaurants is Oni Ramen right in Deep Ellum. There are a cool little spots around the Main Street in deep ellum. Moving on, the Winspear opera house. It’s classy and absolutely gorgeous with its modern architecture.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My girlfriend Lauren is the main reason I got started with my business. She needed senior pictures and I always had a passion for photography. After seeing how much I enjoyed doing portraiture, I decided to delve right into it and start a business.
