We had the good fortune of connecting with Patrick Mikyles and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Patrick, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve been in the Entertainment Industry for over 18 years and I have been part of a plethora of drag shows and variety shows a like. What I never saw was a show that was inclusive and reached every table, no matter front or back row. I tried multiple times to create my style of “interactive Drag shows” under other companies and bars but was never taken seriously. So I took the time , learned the business side of it and ventured out on my own. The idea was to create an impactful drag show outside the normal late night show time slot everyone is accustomed to and can very rarely attend. 2 years later I have the #1 Drag Show is Fort Worth.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
This Journey definitely hasn’t been easy, but then again nothing worth it ever is. I identify as a male entertainer which means as long as I’ve been entertaining and performing I’ve had an uphill battle. Many doors slammed in my face, stages closed off to me simply because I present another side of drag. I took any stage I could get and a lot of the times for free. I just wanted to perform, I never knew there was a paycheck involved or a booking fee to claim.
I got into male pageantry and won a multitude of awards in multiple states which helped build my resume and gave reason as to why I became “bookable”. 2013 is when it really took off for me and I traveled the country performing, became published in a book, read with tv producers for pilot tv shows.
All this to say that I still had to fight for a hometown spot. I had enough of it and knew the idea I was sitting on was literal gold. I pitched it to a few bars and restaurants but they didn’t take me seriously and passed me on to the next.
To have a show that involved the audience safely and under full consent, literally transforming two audience members into a drag queen themselves and have them lipsync battle for a crown was unheard of.
The Red Goose Saloon took a chance on me and 2 years later we have 3 credited awards through Fort Worth Weekly and consistently sell out shows with audiences of 80+ patrons every Saturday.
What I want the world to know is if you have a dream hold it tight, don’t sleep on it but also realize timing is everything. Don’t force it, ride it out because there are lessons to learn a long the way and when it you finally get the opportunity to release it into the world, never look back and never let another person tell you it won’t work.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Omg so many lol, ok if I have to narrow it down, every Monday me and my friends go eat ramen and drink sake at a place called Wabi House, its sooo good. From there I’d have to water gardens here in downtown Fort Worth, it’s beautiful at night with all the colorful lights. When I’m not on stage I like to hang out at our local LGBTQIA bar The Urban Cowboy Saloon, my friends Sapphire Keaton and Patrick Kubin own it and it’s very welcoming to everyone and just easy to chill on the patio with a cocktail and listen to music. Lastly we’d probably go eat at Texas De Brazil because you doesn’t love a good steak or 5 lol.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I know that everyone always says they wouldn’t be where they are without certain people in their life but it’s true. All true… It truly does take an army and you have to surround yourself with those that believe in your dream sometimes more than you do. My shout out, love, and admiration goes out to a few people including first and foremost my God for who my faith never waivers, my husband Justin Rodriguez, my rock and the reason I was able to take that leap of faith and leave the corporate world for good and embark on this journey.
MzSheree Smith aka Momma Brunch who is another mother to me, Jeremy Calderon, Nicki Lynn, Tank aka Mike Streb, and The Vibe Tribe.
All of these individuals have shown me that if you are a good genuine person with the best intentions everything you manifest is possible.
