We had the good fortune of connecting with Olivia Arratia and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Olivia, is there something you believe many others might not?
“Make sure the field you go into will make you a lot of money” I believe there is a missing element to this piece of “advice”. It suggests that the main goal in a career is to make money and never think twice about the effects it will have on your life. We are humans, comprised of talents and gifts. We have passions and are made for love! I think the better way to say this is, “Make sure you are passionate about the field you are going into, then find ways on how you can make a living out of it.” There is a “dream job” out there for everyone! Sometimes we are looking in the wrong places to find it.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My work engages in the social, cultural, and religious aspects of Hispanic culture, as well as the design elements of where I was born and raised in Southern California. My work is a roadmap that helps me understand myself and my heritage through research of where I came from and those who have gone before me. When you are following your heart and the mission of love, it will never be easy. I knew there would be trials and difficulties, but I also knew I was never on my own! I try not to see success through the eyes of others, but only of God’s. My life in this world is only to serve Him. Through these things I am learning to let go and let God, and by his grace, I am blessed. The goal in my career is to build an environment that encourages responsibility, collaboration, creativity, and depth. Through teaching, I work toward the betterment of a person through academia. In Photography, I am able to capture the beauty of both humans and nature. In design, I can create an expression of oneself to create a better sense of communication and understanding.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are some great galleries and studio spaces around the DFW area! Ex Ovo, FW Blackhouse, and Sweetpass Sculpture Park are some of my favorite locations to view local art. The Light Loft, The Lumen Room, and The Darkroom are amazing photography studios I can take any friend to have a fun photoshoot with!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to thank my family for always supporting me in my career choices and teaching me that you always have to work hard for what you want!
