We had the good fortune of connecting with Miesha Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Miesha, can you tell us about an impactful book you’ve read and why you liked it or what impact it had on you?
My favorite business book is The Birth Of a Brand by Brian Smith the co-founder of UGG. He writes such an interested story filled with the ups and downs of what it took to make such an iconic brand. Along the way he refers to the process of building a longstanding brand as similar to raising children and it really adds a personal touch to the story. After I read the book I felt extremely energized to start my business and everything really started to come together.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

I got the idea to start Gold Soul Candle Co. and create home fragrances at a time when I realized my favorite place to be was my home. I loved candles and had a dream one night that I owned a candle shop. It felt so real that I woke up and immediately started researching how to create candles. The name, the branding and the concept all came to me as if it were destined and I just went along with it.
During the time of creation I realized that I wanted to focus on more than just selling home fragrances, I wanted to emphasize the feeling I would give to my customers. I wanted them to have something unique, luxury without the huge price tag, and a brand that truly aimed to fill a creative space. The idea of this type of company is complex and layered so at this point in the journey I look to the fragrance trendsetters and early adopters to understand the vision. However, in the future I know that we are on pace to be the blueprint for home fragrance brands. We will be the innovators that push the industry towards being more people-focused, creative, and inclusive.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

The first place that I would take anybody in the city would be Black Swan Yoga for a hot yoga session. I love to eat so most of the places after that would be my favorite food spots. My favorite restaurant ever is Kenny’s Wood Fired Grill in Addison, because its consistently the best service and salmon in the city. The second place would be Casa Del Vegano, its a vegan mexican restaurant and everything on the menu is seriously a 10/10.
For fun at night, I would head over to Shoals in Deep Ellum for some good drinks and live music on Sundays. Lastly, we would do some shopping at NorthPark Mall and Breadwinners for brunch.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout goes to my amazing supportive family and friends. I wouldn’t even have the courage to share my products with the world without their support and love. My tribe is amazing and they have taught me so much about myself. Also, God of course for giving me such an amazing idea for a company that focuses on the soul.
