We had the good fortune of connecting with Michella Gurley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michella, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
patience and consistencyAlright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Back in 2006, my husband and I lost everything back when the economy crash. My husband was an employee in the airline industry and I was a loan originator. We went through so much financial hardship in the coming years that the average people would have lost their minds or divorced. When didn’t no where we was going to stay or what our kids was going to eat. Taking odd jobs over the next several years, I could exhale just little with the hardship. Not until 2009 we relocated to Texas I could see a little light starting to shine from the bottom of the barrel. I gave birth to my daughter in 2010. While working in the Sales industry I meet a couple that was a filming a movie. My husband, kids and I later starred in their movie. While working with the cast, I meet people who love my knowledge of sports and suggested I should do sports media. I started my first on air radio show in 2014. While working in media, I inform my husband I wanted to start my own t-shirt business. My husband took money out of his 401k and invested into my business. Selling t-shirts to friends and some family my little business started to take off. I named my business Well Kept Wifey. With the growth of it I wanted to expand the brand to more things a wife could adore. I expanded it into Home Decor and Faux Fur. My company Well Kept Wifey became a Peta Approved Vegan Business. I became a buyer. Loving the financial freedom, I was gaining I became a stay at home mom in 2016. 2017 my radio show, “This Gal Love’s Sports Show” received media access to cover the WNBA Dallas Wings in Arlington, Texas. I covered them for two years. June of 2017, I was a speaker at MegaFest 2017 on a panel speaking about entrepreneurship. Through the years of interviewing women and men in sports I gain knowledge of other entrepreneurs. Speaking on other platforms from Volunteers of American,Churches and school districts I became more empowered to lead by example. One day I look in the mirror and asked myself, “what can leave to my kids?” A business. I started to surround myself with people who had more knowledge in entrepreneurship and success. I expanded my brand into Michella Cosmetics & Skincare in 2018. Wanting to make my brand a one stop shop, I created Marble ES Michella a women clothing and accessory boutique. Later in 2018 I published a children’s journal on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. It became a success in my daughter’s school district. In 2019, I wanted to show my husband my appreciation for everything he has done for me I started Gurley Constructions LLC a highway construction company. In 2020 Gurley Constructions LLC became SBE, WBE and MBE certified. Even with COVID-19 surfacing in 2020, I pressed on has mompreneur never allowing life to distract me from success. On Black Friday 2020 my ten year old daughter and I published our first children’s book “Paige Meets Alexysia At Sea.” I wanted to make sure I add my kids name to business why not as an author. Still not feeling complete I want to help other moms succeed. In January of 2021, I released two digital downloads Keto Diet Cookbook and Grit Of A Mompreneur.Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Loving to eat and shop would start my day off with Starbucks. My besties and I love’s it there. While enjoying our frappes and mocha’s will head to Snooze on Oaklawn in downtown Dallas for breakfast. The menu is great you can’t go wrong. After breakfast we have to walk it off. Now it’s retail time. Shopping in North Park Mall in Dallas too shopping in Mansfield Home Goods. As night is approaching we would change clothing and enjoying a dinner with our husband’s at Trulucks on Friday night and Eddie V’s in Fort Worth. Sunday morning will have breakfast pho soup. Afternoon time we will watch sports at BoomerJacks in Arlington Highlands.Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
