We had the good fortune of connecting with Michele Huffman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michele, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Taking a risk is exactly how I got to where I am today. The unknown can be extremely scary, but sometimes that’s exactly what you need,Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a certified Strength & Conditioning Coach, but often referred to as a personal trainer. Both titles being extremely close in nature, but my intentions behind specifically becoming a Strength Coach are slightly different. I played collegiate softball at Stephen F. Austin State University, and after graduating with my bachelors degree, I decided to stay in school for my masters. While in graduate school, I had the opportunity to work as a Graduate Assistant in the Strength & Conditioning Athletic Facility. I gained an incredible amount of experience working with my own individual sports teams as well as being responsible for writing and creating their training programs. I worked with just about every sport, and learned as much as I could. After graduating graduate school, I decided that this is what I wanted to do long term. I loved working with athletes, and I loved coaching. This was the best of both worlds. I wasn’t tied down to one specific sport, but working in the Strength & Conditioning department, you are able to work with all the teams. I sat for my certification exam, and quickly become a Certified Strength & Conditioning Coach at the Collegiate level. This was important to me because going this specific route required more work on my end, but I wanted to do it. Two months after graduating I moved to Virginia and accepted a Strength & Conditioning Coaching position at Radford University. I worked with many sports, as well as programmed, for my individual sports teams. I specifically worked with, Women’s Soccer, Women’s Field Hockey, Women’s Basketball, Softball, Tennis, Golf, and Swimming & Diving. I spent 3 years at Radford University, but I was slowly itching to get back to the great state of Texas. In March of 2015, I accepted a job in Dallas at a Strength & Conditioning facility. This job brought me back to Texas, and put me closer to my family, which is ideally what I was looking for. I spent the next 4-5 years working at different facilities coaching Strength & Conditioning classes multiple times a day, and working with my own individual clients outside of class time. It wasn’t until the beginning of 2020, that I decided that I wanted to branch off on my own, and begin training personal clients, and back away from coaching classes at other facilities. I enjoyed coaching classes, but it was starting to interfere with my schedule and in the long run, I had better opportunities working with individual clients. I currently work at a local gym in Fort Worth called Fox Fitness, and I work as a contract coach. Essentially I recruit my own clientele, but we train out of Fox Fitness’s facility. The owners and management are absolutely great and I truly love going to work every single day. When I decided to work for myself and become self employed, I was extremely nervous and anxious about the entire situation. I would no longer have the comforts of a consistent second income (working at another facility), and being solely in charge of my time and schedule seemed very cool, but also scary. On the other side, I knew I could do it. It might take some time, but in the long run, this was going to be the best choice for me. I am very happy that I decided to trust in myself, because this was one of the best decisions I ever made.Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First and foremost we would hit up “Doughboy Donuts”. I am very much a donut enthusiast and these are easily the best donuts in the DFW area. They are currently relocating to Burleson, but the drive is WORTH IT! If my guest had never been to Texas, then I would definitely show them all of Fort. Worth and what it has to offer. We would go down to the stockyards, to get the true Texas experience, we could go downtown Fort Worth and easily walk around in the square. Once we were ready to eat, we would go to the new Southside Fort Worth area that has plenty of restaurants, bars, and patio views, or we would go down to Magnolia street, which also has many great restaurants and places to see. The Coyote Drive In, is also a great idea if you are looking for something to do at night. They have a fully stocked concession stand, as well as a bar. There is plenty of picnic tables for seating, and if you are there during the holidays, ice skating is always an option. Load up your tail gate, buy all the snacks, get comfortable and enjoy a good movie. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am extremely grateful to my family and friends who have supported me throughout the years. They have always believed in me and have truly been such a great support system.
