We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Romatowski and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michael, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
By far the most important trait to possess is the ability to adapt. You have your vision and you map out your plan, but the laws of the Universe dictate that nothing ever goes smoothly for long.

The boxer Mike Tyson once said, “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.” That’s how it is in business. You have a great staff. Someone leaves. Adapt. Your business is rolling. COVID strikes out of nowhere, shutting down commerce. Adapt. You invest in a marketing plan. It fails. Adapt. And so on…

You’ll have many successes, and many failures. You’ll have to adapt to both situations. Yes, even a success can cause the need to adapt. You run an email campaign. It is a smashing success. Demand for your product skyrockets, leaving you unprepared. Adapt. Adapt. Adapt!

What should our readers know about your business?
My current business, Mach 3 Golf Speed Training, evolved from the fact that I moved to a new city, basically without a job, and had to start from scratch. I had lived on the East Coast my entire life, but 7 years ago moved to San Antonio, Texas, to help take care of a parent who had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s. After about 6 months of relatively feeble income, I launched a new company to help golfers train more effectively for their sport.

My timing was good and my company gained attention very quickly. Within a few months, my business partner and I were traveling 15-20 days per month, teaching my system to golf instructors all over the country. It all happened so fast, I was never sure of the exact reasons why we became so popular. We were simply trying to keep up.

Then, COVID struck. In the blink of an eye our road workshops were shut down. Every business person has their COVID tale of woe. It was a devastating blow. For 18 months we did not travel at all. I used this time to beef up our online presence, creating virtual courses and an online certification. The ability to adapt is crucial, and you have to be a scrapper. You have to keep plugging away, putting in the effort day after day and believing you can turn a bad situation around and make it productive.

No one who is highly successful is “normal.” Successful people have a clearer vision, a tougher mindset, a stronger work ethic, and probably greater stubbornness than normal people. They will keep fighting to make their vision a reality. They refuse to give up.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am a foodie – I have all my little spots around town where I eat almost every day. Cafe Vida is a great little cafe that serves a huge variety of dishes with a Latin flavor. Sake Cafe is literally one minute from my house, and has fabulous Sushi. For more a sports bar feel – to watch a game – I would take them to Walk On’s, which is a chain but has a great menu of Cajun style food.

All of my friends are golfers, so we would also play several rounds, with my favorite local courses being Brackenridge Park, The Quarry, and an out-of-the-way little gem in Comfort called Buckhorn.

San Antonio also has an amazing system of trails for hiking, running and biking. It’s a pretty vast network and we would definitely hit the Greenway trails for some long outdoor walks.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
A big shoutout to my father, Ray Romatowski. He was a man of relatively few words, but when he spoke, you listened. His job carried great responsibility and it was sometimes a heavy cross to bear. His greatest trait was his consistency and his work ethic. Many, many times I’ve had to rely on his oft-repeated credo… “You always have the option of outworking the other guy.” You won’t always be the smartest guy in the room, but you can always be the one who works the hardest.
