We had the good fortune of connecting with Megan Halphen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Megan, what do you attribute your success to?
Having a close circle of friends and family that continued to support me, along with many professional relationships with people who have a knowledge set that they shared. For example, my now husband has a finance background and helped me determine a line of credit would be more advantageous than a loan for financing the Mobile Magnolia’s renovation. Another key person is a close friend who has already launched a business and shared the laundry list of documentation I needed to secure to begin my journey. This list goes on an on to also include colleagues from my 9-5 food industry job that sponsored my R&D work. During my launch phase I was often burdened with fear of the unknown. Their motivation and expertise were critical in my moving my business forward.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My background started at Texas A&M as I graduated with a B.S. in Food Science & Technology. I worked in R&D for 2 years prior to transitioning to sales, also in the food industry. As a traveling ingredient salesperson I had the beautiful experience of traveling the country, with a few international trips sprinkled in. As the pandemic put a hard stop on my traveling foodie career, I realized how much I missed product development and being creative on the bench. I took the opportunity to start working on my own cocktails at home, which developed into an interest in developing mixers to create elevated cocktails. Then my sales background kicked in and I thought I’d give it a shot selling these at local markets.

After a few months of this I stumbled across a concept I hadn’t seen, mobile bars, I immediately recognized this as a business adjacent concept and decided to start this journey. I secured a vintage camper and a renovation specialist within a week!

Absolutely no part of this journey was easy. Supply chain issues made bottles hard to find, renovation took longer than expected due to labor shortages, and I lacked the know-how on launching my own website and social media which ended up a costly but worth it outsource.

I viewed every challenge as it’s own individual challenge and would focus on overcoming it before moving on to another one to avoid feeling overwhelmed. I learned that when starting a business there may be a significant amount of costs not budgeted for and I can’t do everything myself. Once I learned to ask for help, I met so many amazing vendors like Bre Creative, who I hired to support my weak areas such as website building.

I’d like my brand and story to recognize that I was influenced by my technical background and maintained by my business background. My brand is an evolution of me and I love sharing my creativity!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is tough because Dallas has so much to offer!

I’d start with Friday happy hour at Inwood Tavern then make our way to TexMex at Desperados or Bandito’s before a night out on Lower Greenville. Leela’s wine bar and Truck Yard are a must!

I would insist on grabbing a matcha latte from La La Land, a morning pilates class at Sessions, lunch at Beverly’s and then hit the Rustic or Katy Trail Ice House for some day drinking. An early evening stroll on the Katy Trail before dinner at Saint Rocco’s in Trinity Groves because, views! It would be wrong to not show off Bishop Arts so a night cap at Oddfellows or Bishop Exchange.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Andrew Halphen Veritex Bank for the Line of Credit used to finance the Mobile Magnolia’s Renovation, he is also my husband and CFO

Christen Janik Schoolhouse Events for the documentation to establish a business in Texas
