We had the good fortune of connecting with McKenna Holcomb and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi McKenna, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
I’ve learned that noticing small things in day to day life brings so much joy and happiness. For example: taking notice of the Crepe Myrtle’s that are in bloom, putting on a fun outfit, or giving a compliment to someone.
Being present with the people and things around me has brought a fullness to my life. It takes me out of my own mind and world. Which in turn, helps me focus on the world around me. Which personally, I think brings joy.
I bring this idea into my work daily and it’s one of the reasons I love wedding photography. I love getting the opportunity to be a part of the most special day in someone’s life. It’s such an honor for me to be in charge of noticing all the small, as well as big, moments on a wedding day so they are documented for the bride and groom to look back on for years to come.
I find so much joy in photography because I get to celebrate others daily and help them to remember the beauty of life!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My faith in Jesus drives everything I do and because of this I find so much purpose in my art. It’s a means for me to love and serve others. Photography puts you in places you never thought you’d be and is a bridge to meet people you never thought you’d meet. I treasure this and do my best to not take the privilege for granted. I use the opportunity to celebrate people and capture all the moments so they can be looked back on forever. This purpose has allowed me to withstand the difficulties that can accompany entrepreneurship at times. My journey has been less of a steady stream and more of an ocean with currents. My business has grown and changed, ebbed and flowed.
Over five years my business moved to three different cities. I’ve been able to focus on different areas of photography like senior portraits, humanitarian photography in 5 different countries, and capturing so many weddings. It has moved from my part time to full time job. It’s taken so many different shapes and my photography has honestly been a companion to me in the midst of life’s hard but also joy filled moments. I find so much beauty in the process it has been.
Looking back, I see a girl who had a camera and encouragement from others to create a job out of something she was passionate about doing. She was nervous to make the step, and in the middle, wondered if it was the right one. Almost five years later, one step after another I’m where I am today, a full time wedding photographer. I’m smiling writing this, just filled with gratitude to be able to do what I’m passionate about as my career.
My why is people. As much as I am passionate about art, what drives my creativity in photography is people and moments. My why is to help make every person in front of my camera feel seen and known. I believe celebration accompanies my job beautifully. As a wedding photographer I get a front row seat in celebrating the bride and groom on their most special day. It’s a privilege and my hope is to help them embrace the moments even more, not take from them.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my friend was coming to visit, I would definitely take her to the Dallas Arboretum especially if it was in the spring time as the tulips are breathtaking. I would then head to a local coffee shop maybe White Rock Coffee since we would already be in that area. We would have to head over to White Rock Lake and take a walk and enjoy our coffees!
Dinner we would head to North Italia in Legacy West. I love this shopping area, it’s modern and classy.
One day we would have to go to Downtown McKinney because this downtown square resembles a Hallmark Movie… I am not kidding. My favorite coffee shop is there, Collective Coffee, so of course we would spend time there.
Stop for lunch and grab a sandwich from Patina Green!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I started my business almost 5 years ago because of the encouragement of my family and friends. In college I was taking senior photos for my friends for free and didn’t even consider doing photography as a career until the people around me encouraged, challenged, and helped me make the step. I wouldn’t be here without the incredible people in my life!
