We had the good fortune of connecting with Luis Torres and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Luis, how do you think about risk?
Taking risks is inherent to any formula leading to success. As Chris Stapleton said once in his song Starting Over…”nobody wins afraid of losing”. That is a monumental truth. Success is about taking calculated risks and having the guts to navigate turbulent waters for certain time, sometimes years. There is no certainty in anything, particularly when you are planning to bring a disruptive idea to reality. Risks are part of life and a fundamental component of any business. There are so many variables involved in starting a business and keeping up with it, that the only sure thing there is on the way, is that there will be challenging times ahead. Having consistency, discipline and a humble heart to learn from mistakes, will determine your success in every project you undertake.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I’m proud of creating something that can last over time, that can survive me. I’m proud of creating something that can be a legacy after my departure. I’m proud I can tell a story worth telling that had been forgotten for a hundred years. A story of a military man, a General, who fought against oppression on behalf of others and took risks without having any warranties of success. General Enrique Gorostieta, the central character of the tequila company I lead, is a story of bravery, adversity, struggle, and sacrifice, but also of consistency and resilience. I did not get to this point the easy way. There have been setbacks and failures. The lessons I have learned in both the practice of law and in the tequila business is that it pays off to do things right, it is worth not to cut corners. You build a character overtime. Consistency has a more significant specific weight than motivation. Resilience, patience and willingness to learn from our mistakes separate the successful from the ones who fail.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’d take my friends to the Yellowstone National Park. We’d be easy on the trip, enjoying sightseeing of the mountains and rivers of both Wyoming and Montana, one of my favorite places on earth. There are amazing places to stop at and just enjoy the views. I like to hang out with people who are fun, but also who you can learn something from them.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The last boss I had was when I was 26 years old. I started my own law firm a year later. I stand tall as a lawyer because of the mentorship he gave me. Family plays a significant role in one’s life too. I had the fortune to be raised by a single mother and a grandma under military discipline and impeccable example. I learn from them the entrepreneurial spirit and the values of hard work and honor. They used to say “no crisis can stand 14 hours a day of work”. A good deal of the credit goes to colleagues and friends. I always looked up to them, trying to learn from their guidance, always open and eager to gain more knowledge. I’ve been blessed with having the privilege of meeting and being accompanied by great people in my life.
