We had the good fortune of connecting with Luis Govea and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Luis, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
The most important lesson I think I’ve learned is to always be willing to learn from others. Now being apart of such a huge industry I’ve had the opportunity to meet so many types of people from all over the world, all of which have their own techniques, advice and experience. Always being open-minded has helped me be able to broaden my knowledge and understanding of what goes on behind-the-scenes.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Building a certain photography style is definitely not easy, for me it took a lot of trial and error.. At the time when I started out I was still really into collecting shoes and I wanted to be able to take good photos of the shoes I wore and meets I went to. After about a couple years of posting my work on Instagram and Flickr I started going to Downtown which is where photo meets would be hosted and that introduced me to cityscape photography and climbing rooftops. That was pretty much 90% of my work after that just because I loved being able to see the Dallas skyline in a way that not many people get to, and I loved the adrenaline. Unfortunately that lasted only about a little over a year, but with the people I met throughout that time I was able to starting shooting portraits of them along with close friends in high school. As time went by my work started maturing and I was able to refine what I did and didn’t like, which that brought me where I am today almost 8 years later.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would definitely have to thank my parents for buying me my first camera for Christmas my freshman year of high school. Needless to say they’re the reason I even started my photography journey and I will always be grateful for that. I would also like to thank my good friend and photographer, Roger @_rogergallegos . We met through photo meets at the start of both of our careers and we’ve helped each other grow and learn ever since. Ironically we both failed photography class in high school. Lastly, I need to thank my girlfriend for encouraging me to make the big step to becoming full time freelance, which has resulted in me being able to start my business and do what I love everyday.
