Meet Kevin Ford | CEO & Head Baker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kevin Ford and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kevin, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
Often, one of the hardest things for a business owner is to be able to shift gears and go in a new or different direction that you didn’t see when you first started the business. WIth needing to make changes during the pandemic, I have learned through the growth progress to be strategic by making necessary moves so we can stay relevant with our followers and customers.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I was raised in a home full of bakers. My grandmother and mother were very good bakers. While growing up, there were homemade cakes, pies, and other desserts frequently baked in our home. Many years ago, my personal baking stint began unexpectedly when I asked my mother for a pound cake, which is my favorite dessert, and she told me to make it myself. So, with the guidance of my grandmother, I successfully made my first-pound cake! That started me on a journey of developing my baking skills to include all types of treats.

With Tell Me Something Sweet, my goal is to bring to the tastes, textures, and deliciousness that I experienced throughout my childhood. Why? Because there are people who have never had a well-made home-style dessert. I want customers locally and around the country to have huge smiles on their faces as they enjoy the sweet taste of the goodness that comes from our freshly made goods. For those who have had the experience of growing up with a family member who baked well, I want it to be a reminder of those times. But for those who may not have had that privilege, I want TMSS to be their introduction to the world of quality baked goods.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A week-long trip to DFW would be full of eating at the best restaurants in town.

Hutchins BBQ in downtown McKinney is the best barbecue you’ll ever have with a great family atmosphere. Then a visit to Kylde Warren Park, a beautiful, family atmosphere with an array of great food trucks of all types of cuisines. In between eating good, we would definitely do some shopping at the awesome North Park mall. As the week-long vacation ends, sitting down at the exquisite Dee Lincoln Prime at The Star in Frisco would be the cherry on top.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I dedicate this shout-out to my lovely wife and co-owner of Tell Me Something Sweet Bakery, Candace Ford. Without her encouraging words and loving push, I don’t believe I would be here with a bakery that I have dreamed of launching for years.
