We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelsey Ryals and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kelsey, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I have always had a love for the arts. Art really motivates me. I also have ADHD. I have always struggled with focus when it comes to a traditional career. But being an artist, photographer has been my outlet for my ADHD. Being creative, helps my focus and keeps me going. The wheels are always turning in my head about how I can make my sets etc.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a newborn & family photographer.

My husband served in the army. And moving around was hard to maintain a traditional job. I started dabbling in photography when we were stationed in Mississippi. I would photograph families who’s solider was leaving for deployment so they had something to hold onto. I was told I should start charging for my work, so I got my tax ID and became legit. I have. Consistently taken workshops, mentoring and training to constantly better my craft.

Photography is a cutthroat industry , but I am a firm believer in community over competition. There is so much talent in the DFW area and I am honored to be apart of that.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am not originally from the DFW area. I am still learning my way. I love the downtown McKinney area. There are so many cute boutiques, live music and yummy places to eat.

I love nature. When I’m not cruising cute downtown areas, I enjoy the lake, camping etc. lake Lewisville has become a great hangout too.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family. My family is my biggest cheerleader and that keeps me motivated
