We had the good fortune of connecting with Keesha Allen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Keesha, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Spreading knowledge on natural hair care. It wasn’t until I had my daughter that my own natural hair journey truly began. I was so eager for her to embrace and love her hair that it caused me to reflect the love, or lack there of, that I had for my own hair. I realized there was so much I didn’t know. Once I educated myself on my hair type, experimented with tons products, even did a big chop, was I truly able to see how beautiful my natural hair really was. It was a process but I got there. I started helping my friends with their natural hair journey, even my mother lol. It was something I became passionate about, that’s what inspired the thought behind creating CocoKeesh. So I’ve made a hair care line and YouTube page devoted to natural hair care.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I wasn’t looking to start a business at all initially. It came to be because my friends who would come to me about their hair, would joking say things about me doing something, anything, having to do with hair because I was good at it and knowledgeable. And it wasn’t easy because once i realized what I wanted to do I had no idea where i begin. Getting started is definitely the hardest part. But I thank God for me friend Nihal, she is like a business guru. I told her my ideas and she put everything together, all i had to do was creat my products. I’m not used to asking people for help, so realizing I need other people was a major lesson. Humbling myself enough to ask for it blessed me in a major way.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This is such an interesting question lol. I am such a big kid so we would definitely hit up Sky Zone, Dave and Busters, or maybe iFly. One of my favorite places to eat is this little restaurant downtown called Pine Fish, the food is great and the restaurant itself is really cute. If they like animals going to the stables would be a move as well. Sunday’s are the for the Lord lol and because I go to be best church in the world (Bethel Northeast), we’d be there bright and early Sunday morning.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My friend Nihal, we’ve been friends since 9th grade and she’s been an absolute blessing. She has aided me in every way when it comes to this business. On days I needed pouring into and needed to be held accountable for my deadlines, she was the one to do it.
