We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Pijanowski and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katie, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
After 3 years in the health and fitness space as a trainer, I saw how so many people, myself included, were using exercise to punish themselves for what they ate and how they would silence their bodies call for rest or more food by waving their “willpower” flag. What was often praised in that space also often led to binge eating after restriction or burnout from exercise. In 2019, I decided to create a new avenue that was more holistic in helping clients achieve overall wellbeing. What I have learned is that fitness and health is so much more complex than just how we move and what we eat. In creating Mind and Body Strong, I wanted to create a safe space to teach women how to reconnect their mind and body so they are working together instead of against each other. I also wanted to help women move away from the narrow standards of beauty culture and what it means to be healthy so they can redefine it for themselves and create a strong foundation to stand on, even when things in life get tough. In my coaching practice, I help my clients do this through the avenues of transformational coaching, intuitive eating, body image healing, embodiment, and mindset tools.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business serves women who want to end the constant war between food and their bodies. I help them pave the way towards peace & feel confident in the bodies they have today. What makes my coaching different is that I focus on being weight neutral and instead guide my clients towards connecting to their bodies vs trying to micromanage them. When we learn to view our body as a person that we can love and nurture, it becomes more of a partnership that we can grow!
What makes me the most excited about this work is that I know there are so many women out there with incredible talents and gifts to share with the world, but may be holding back because they feel they need to lose weight and “look the part” first. I help them recognize that they get to have the life they want RIGHT NOW! In the bodies they have today! Once they reclaim their time, money, and energy back from diet culture they can use that to creating the life they desire.
How did I get to where I am today? I owe so much of where I am at to the many incredible mentors and certifications I invested in. But it also came through my willingness to get it wrong and to keep on going until I got it right! The biggest lessons I have learned are to start before you feel “ready”, be willing to be coachable, and to surround yourself with other incredible entrepreneurs who can support and encourage you along the way.
What I want people to know about my brand is that this is a space you can come as you are. That you are not broken and in need of fixing. And that your biggest dreams are worth fighting for.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There are SO many amazing places in the DFW area! If you love Italian food, Urbano Cafe and Saint Rocco’s are UNMATCHED! All the food and drinks are so amazing. Want to watch live music and have your pick at multiple bar and food options? Head up to Frisco to Legacy hall. I recommend Roots Chicken, it’s the best I have ever had. Brunch is also big in Dallas so great ready! The best brunch places I have been to so far include First Watch, The Old Monk, Whistle Britches, and Pie Tap for their breakfast pizzas. Sightseeing downtown? Walk Klyde warren park and catch the trolley to uptown area or walk the Katy Trial. Hit up the art museum, Perot museum or the aquarium. Want to get out of the city a bit? White rock lake is my favorite place to walk, kayak, throw up my hammock or even have a picnic.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
All that I have become is because of the support, mentorship, and friendship I have received along the way! I want to dedicate this shout out to my friend and incredible coach herself, Chelsea Meece, who has always believed in me and helped remind me of my why for the past 5 years. I also want to credit my coaches Jaclyn Gallo, for speaking life into my crazy business idea in the first place, and to my coach Holly Toronto for being the greatest mentor & support system through some of my deepest levels of healing and growth.
