We had the good fortune of connecting with Kat Scheurer MS, RD, LD, CPT and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kat, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I would say the most important factor behind the success of my business thus far is attributed to building the “like, know and trust” factor. It’s very important to me that my clients feel comfortable and feel like they know me as a person and a professional during our visits. I find this makes for a calm environment during sessions and more likely to lead to laughs, good memories and positive outcomes for the client.
What should our readers know about your business?
I’ve been a dietitian for 11 years and started my private practice 3.5 years ago. I took a leap of faith opening this business and it has taught me a lot. When I first opened, I wanted to be a “jack of all trades” dietitian and counsel all kinds of people with a variety of nutrition-related issues including kidney issues, diabetes, heart disease, eating disorders and weight management. It took me about a year or so to realize two things: that I couldn’t be an expert in every field of nutrition and that the biggest need in Fort Worth was for Eating Disorders. With time, I’ve niched down and currently only see individuals struggling with Eating Disorders and disordered eating. This has made me a better provider my clients! Other than being a personal trainer, I think the biggest thing that sets me apart from others is the “food freedom” approach I take via my Instagram account: @eat.guiltfree. I started @eat.guiltfree in hopes to educate women that they don’t have to count every calorie they put in their body, they don’t have to obsess about food all day long, they don’t have to punish themselves in the gym for what they’ve eaten and they can learn to appreciate their body and move it in a way that feels good to them. Through @eat.guiltfree, I run a 6 week group program for women struggling with all of the above and want to find freedom from obsessive thoughts about food and their bodies that hinder their daily life. It’s been amazing to see these women come together, heal their relationship with food and exercise and support each other through something they thought they were totally alone in.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would absolutely go out to eat – a lot!! We’d first head to Clearfork for some shopping and dinner at Mesero followed by some late night bowling at Pinstripes. Assuming it is nice out the following day, we’d walk on the Trinity River Trail to and from brunch at Press Cafe. We’d definitely have to visit the Fort Worth Zoo and play tennis at Ridglea Country Club. As for other meals, it wouldn’t be a visit to Fort Worth without dinner at Reata right by Sundance Square. I love their rooftop that overlooks downtown! We would definitely spend the last half of a day on Magnolia Ave – happy hour at Kent & Co which is a really cool wine bar and then dinner at Ellerbe fine foods (a must!). Lastly, we’d go spend a night or two at Possum Kingdom Lake since it’s only a short 1 hour 20 minute drive. We’d party in Hell’s gate and then go hiking on any of the various trails
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Oh wow……there’s no way I could thank just one person but I’d like to start by thanking my husband, Paul. He has always supported my business and even came up with it’s legal name (Retroactive Health PLLC). He’s never once complained (even with biz was slow) and has always said “just keep doing what you are doing.” I’d also love to thank my family. They’ve all been so encouraging, uplifting and supportive! I definitely want to thank my best girlfriends (you know who you are!) who always give me such great feedback and make me feel like I’m the best at what I do! Lastly, I definitely want to thank Girls to Women & Young Men’s Health & Wellness Fort Worth for bringing me into your office which has opened up so many opportunities; including working with the most amazing women in Fort Worth! (wow I feel like I just wrote my Grammy’s speech or something haha)
