We had the good fortune of connecting with Kari Martinez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kari, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I am thankful for the opportunity to not only witness someone else’s happiness or once in a lifetime moments’, but to photograph them and actually transform them into beautiful images that will be treasured forever. My creative side allows me to emphasize details such as beautiful smiles, sparkling eyes, a glowing mommy to be and her belly, a delightful touch between lovers, a fearless look, and many other details that may go unnoticed. I also can’t help it but I just always need to capture that perfect picture no matter what 😀

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
What sets me apart from others? I have honestly asked myself this a million times since I started shooting. I honestly hope that what sets me apart is my passion for what I do and the vision I have when doing it. I cannot work a 9-to-5 job due to my youngest daughters’ diagnosis, and (now) being a single mother, I find myself trying to balance everything. I’d have to say my biggest struggle is that it’s just physically, mentally and emotionally draining sometimes for me but I still wouldn’t change my life for anything. I get to provide for my daughters and I, I get to pursue one of my passions, make a living off of it, and I get to spend actual time with my girls. Challenges come and go. Sure I get some bad days, but I consider myself a very positive and strong individual.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love the fact that I grew up in Dallas because there is ALWAYS something to do or somewhere to go. I am a pretty simple person though. I’d probably plan on the 1st day a late start and visit a local coffee shop and then head over to a mall or the flea market. I love being able to just relax, walk, and shop around. Afterwards I’d probably recommend we pick up lunch from a great taco stand. I love trying new places especially small businesses.
I would lastly plan to enjoy the sunset for sure I’d plan to go to White Rock Lake, Murrell Park or Lake Ray Hubbard.
The following days I would love to fit in a visit to an attraction. I love the zoos, water parks and arcades like Main Event and Nickelrama. I always like being able to attend concerts so hopefully that would also be on the schedule. I would also like to visit a park the Arbor Hills Preserve in Plano. I would lastly be sure my friend gets to try some delicious raspados or paletas (shaved ice or popsicles). I believe the best trips are the ones where you kind of just go with the flow and like to see where you end up.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I honestly have so many people to thank for helping me get here. My husband, my parents, my closest friends were all there at the beginning of it all. The struggle was real, but eventually my clients & models were the ones that really helped me keep growing. I feel like having the support or so many friends and family was always more than enough for me to pursue my photography career. I am self-taught BUT I do pay close attention to other photographers and try to learn from them. DFW has a long list of very talented photographers and my only hope is to one day be on that list as well.
