We had the good fortune of connecting with Joshua Bedford and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joshua, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Whether small or big, taking risk can be a very scary hurdle to cross due to not knowing what’s on the other side at times. The way I see risk is that it all comes down to mental. You can only take that proposed risk by taking full control of your mental and preparing your self for the good and bad of the situation. Either way, because you’ve prepared yourself the decision is a lot easier to make in my opinion because you aren’t making an impulse decision and simply hoping for a good result. Taking risk has a major outcome on my personal and career life! From deciding to leave my hometown of Flint, MI to relocate to Chicago, IL to quitting my Full Time job to go full fledge with JB Productions, these are risk I have mentally prepared for and have great success within my ventures thus far. These specific risk have helped me to always step out on faith whether its spiritually, financially or mentally!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Initially I started out doing sports photography in which my brand was labeled “JBSportsphotography”. In doing so, I was fortunate enough to work with the University of Michigan’s Football program, the Michigan Chronicle media outlet, The Flint City Bucks soccer team and many more! Fast forward too today, my brand is “JB Productions”. I think my proudest moment/project so far has been working with the Environmental Defense Fund & Black Millennials for Flint to film and photograph the environmental injustices surrounding Flint, MI and the Flint water crisis. In terms of professional standing, I’d say that I got to where to I am today through leveraging relationships and always seeking out new opportunities. As a small business owner looking to go really far with your brand, I think that it is super important to keep all options because you never know what types of doors people have access too. That said, you never ever want to limit your self, your growth or your opportunities. Getting to where I am now was definitely not easy. I do however feel as thought things come natural as far as clients and new opportunities, but that is because after so many failures and being told no, you eventually learn how to navigate your way to a “yes”! Nothing happens over night and I’d be completely lying if I said any of this was easy. In fact quitting my job to run my own business has probably been the hardest thing I’ve ever encountered. But because I have a goal and vision of where I want to be, it makes the decision extremely easy to give with even when things aren’t going as plabnned! To cap things off, the most important things that I want people to know about me and my brand is that it is never about the money for me. Do I need it to survive and grow my business? As everyone else, absolutely! But for me, its deeper than that, I get to wake up everyday and do what I love. I get to make people smile and feel confident through photography, I get to make people look cool through film, and most of all I get to encourage everyone I encounter to follow their dreams no matter how big or how small!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Someone id like to shoutout and give thanks to is my Girlfriend Cara! She has been right by my side through life’s many ups and downs. She serves as my best friend, motivator and often times my personal assistant during photo shoots. She always find the right words to say when I want to just throw in the towel because things aren’t looking up and for that I am forever grateful!
