We had the good fortune of connecting with Joe Shaw and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joe, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
For me, podcasting has always been a passion project. “The DTALKS Podcast” is where I try to empower and educate folks to raise inclusive kids. It can be hard knowing if you’ve made an impact in the world. But, when I get those one-off messages from listeners telling me specifically how an episode has changed their life, I’m able to keep pushing. Over the last year I created a 2nd podcast “After the Encore” which is a long-form career retrospective music podcast where I take listeners behind the music of some of their favorite artists. Such as, The Reverend Shawn Amos, Tony Lucca, and Chris Kirkpatrick from *NSYNC. As much as I’ve enjoyed doing these podcast interviews I also struggled trying to figure out if the podcast was making an impact on anyone. However, I recently was nominated for the “2020 Music Podcast of the Year Award” by PodcastAwards.com and just getting that little bit of recognition has helped propel me forward to the next Volume of the podcast.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m committed to educating and empowering folks to help make a more inclusive world. Graduating with a degree in Theatre I’m a storyteller at heart and podcasting is my medium of choice. What I love most about podcasting is it fosters an environment that perfectly replicates the way people actually talk. Which invites other folks into the room to both listen and learn. ‘The DTALKS Podcast’ is my attempt to help folks raise more inclusive kids by exposing them to perspectives they may not normally listen to. This is also my way of helping me to #beabetterdad which is one of the mottos of the show. ‘After the Encore’ allows me to break down the artistic process by doing a long-form career retrospective with each of my guests. While we can discuss a specific song or album in a shorter interview I choose the longer process to tell a complete story.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I absolutely love the Modern Art Museum of Ft. Worth. If you’re looking for great art in the city that’s the place to go.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to thank all the fine folks at Vokal Media & Roberts Media Group for their support in both of my podcast ventures. Also, huge thanks to my family for their love and support. I also want to thank all the guests I’ve had the pleasure of speaking to. Without them I wouldn’t have a show.
