We had the good fortune of connecting with Jasmine Holmes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jasmine, as a parent, what have you done for you children that you feel has had the most significant impact?
I am a mother to 4 girls and 1 boy. The most important thing I’ve done as a parent was go to therapy. I come from an environment where I wasn’t taught how to communicate in a healthy manner and no one ever talked about therapy but we knew many folks with illnesses including my mother. My father could’ve been bi polar but we will just have to go with he was a Gemini because he was never diagnosed as far as I know. Seriously, when you go to therapy , you start to understand where the problems stem from and how to break the cycle. It is also very important when both parents go to therapy because without the right tools most families will fail. The best thing I could’ve done was listen to understand, become aware, and unlearn behaviors. My children watch me do yoga, listen to me pray , hear apologies, and they are affirmed they are loved just for who they are everyday. Everything I work for is to better my community and so the physical impact that will be left with my family is DFW Black Moms Walking Organization. However; the mental impact will be greater than my dreams.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
DFWBMW is a dynamic networking group focused on mental health and supporting local black owned businesses. I am most proud of the touch it has on the community and to hear people say they needed this space. I got to where I am today professionally by not acting like I know everything and by seeking guidance when I needed it. I ask questions even if its uncomfortable. Another thing is , I connect my network and people see the value in that. I am a natural connector …It wasn’t easy mentally but physically yes I had already been prepared for this from my previous experience. The biggest lesson I’ve learned along the way is collaboration and emotional intelligence are key. When two parties look at their communities and think about what they really need and how they can come together to create that, and make it happen …. Beautiful things start happening.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
