We had the good fortune of connecting with Janae Samuel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Janae, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I always knew I wanted to start my own business and be my own boss. For me the main driving reason was because I wanted to create a brand that was fully me and aligned with what I believe in and I couldn’t quite find anything that did what I was doing. I wanted to be able to create a solid foundation that I had control over building and the direction of how I wanted to grow The Golden Hour Spa. Also, who doesn’t want to create their own schedule?
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Does any good thing ever come easy? Haha! There’s been tons of challenges along the way. I feel like I’ve defied a lot of the odds that were stacked against me and I know there’s always new hurdles that will come. The Golden Hour Spa was previously known as Well Beyond Beauty. The brand change in itself was probably one of the biggest curveballs. It came out of the blue, and was due to someone states away trademarking the name. I quickly then had to dream up a new brand with the same heartbeat, very quickly to avoid legal trouble. People don’t warn you about those things and how to handle them. You learn as you go and keep pressing forward. Al in all its been a blessing because it allowed me to make it even better then I was before and think of an even bigger picture and scale, because when I originally opened a spa, I didn’t dream on that level like I do now. So I’m really proud of what I have created here and the future of the spa. On top of that, I’m a single mama of four kiddos, so constantly juggling and faced with personal life mixed with business life. But I’ll tell you mamas are magic, and there’s nothing you can’t do, as long as you have the drive.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Ah I love this question, because I love to host people and make them Texans. So I would say for sure book The Wilde House through Airbnb (shameless plug, I am the owner) , and go to first Monday in Canton! After a few days hidden away in the pines of East Texas, I would say come to Dallas stay at the Virgin hotel, grab coffee and breakfast at Ascension, and some lunch at velvet taco, and treat yourself to Nick & Sams for dinner! I would say get weird and go explore Deep Ellum, and if you had the time head over to Fort Worth for some classic stockyard action and Reatas rooftop for some yummy cocktails and bites. I’m a foodie. What can I say.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to shout out my father, Andrew Samuel, he is a wildly successful entrepreneur, and who I can thank for giving me that mindset and teaching me all that I’ve learned about business. He continues to always be a source of wisdom and a sounding board. Maddy Hazen of Pais and Haze! She is the genius behind the branding for The Golden Hour and my Airbnb The Wilde House! I would not have two brands that are very much me, without her. I often consider her part of my team because she is so involved in the ongoing growth of both businesses. She is also a dear friend that together we started another business venture, Refresh: Brand& Body. Also Danielle Doty who helped encourage me to go back to school to be licensed and supported me on the journey to opening up my own spa and my rental property, The Wilde House! She’s a badass mama/ realtor.
