We had the good fortune of connecting with Jan Goodwin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jan, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
Selling art is a very personal task. It’s difficult to acquire a following of buyers because there are so many talented artists out there. I wonder what could make me stand out and attract my audience.
I would like outsiders to know that compliments and the simple act of admiration, even without a purchase is so satisfying and uplifting when it’s sincere.
That alone is confirmation that I’m on the right path and gives me motivation to keep creating. It really helps to know which images are ones I can expand on.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a new artist, self taught using teaching videos and taking a lot of time to look at artwork from artists I feel connected to. And painting at least daily keeps me in practice.
Watercolor in particular is a challenging medium so there’s not much room for mistakes. I’ve painted repeatedly to get a version of one image that I’m satisfied with.
I’ve learned that pristine work is valued and is satisfying when you can be confident in packaging a sale for a buyer.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The Fort Worth Stockyards is a great place to spend at least a couple of days exploring.
I love the flavor and ambiance of that area and it had been a great source of painting inspiration. We would visit the best TexMex food restaurants around and/or eat at one of the best steakhouses. The Longhorn cattle drive is impressive and for an out-of-towner, it’s amazing to see the size and scope of the horns and to imagine the sheer weight and their capability to maneuver them.
It’s very hot here now and a swim in one of the natural springs a little further south into hill country would be nice. Of course, we’d have to stop and get Parker County peaches and beef jerky at Bucees along the way.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband is my muscle, my roadie, my source of the best and honest critique and
best friend. I never could have had the courage and confidence to keep keeping on without him. Just as important are my family and close friends whose opinions I value that help keep me focused.
