We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamie and Landon Skelton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jamie and Landon, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
Landon and I both have day jobs outside of our small business. Even though we would love the idea of only running our small business , we find it important to not lose the fun we have with our art. A lot of artists try to turn their passion into a career and lose sight of why they started making their art. It is very important to us to not lose our passion. We don’t want our art to just feel like another job, but rather an outlet for our creativity.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets Skelton Key Crafts apart from other small businesses is that we create unique leather and crochet goods. This pair of mediums is not typically shown side by side and ours is not the typical products you would think of when thinking of leather and crochet goods. Being in Texas most residents think of western leather styles when thinking of leather goods. However, Landon prefers to create more alternative pieces such as Plague Doctor masks, Rune patches, Pint sleeves, and Bill Folds without stamping. He makes pieces that make him happy not just what the typical customer wants. I also prefer to make more alternative pieces in my crochet such as Voodoo dolls, Beanies with studs, Dragons, and many more types of plushies. Of course, we do offer custom orders so If someone wanted a more traditional item it could be considered. We are most excited about getting traffic on our new website www.skeltonkeycrafts.com. Expanding to the ecommerce side of selling product is definitely challenging and requires daily effort. Since Covid hit we haven’t been able to do any live events, so being able to get a website up in running has been our priority. We are still building our following and hope to see it bring in online sales. This hasn’t been easy but we will continue to post on Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok , Twitter, and YouTube to get our brand out there. We have learned that this isn’t the easiest road to walk , but we know that it will be worth it in the end. The world will never stop needing art. Art is what sets us apart from other species yet also connects us in understanding. Skelton Key Crafts represents our passion and hard work. All we want is to share that with the world to make it a little better.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would take our friends to hangout around Denton because there are all types of entertainment and social events to be found. One of our favorite spots to hang out would be what is called “Beer Alley” , its an alley that is shared by Denton County Brewing Co and The Bearded Monk. This is a great spot to hangout since there is not only great beverages but concerts, art shows , food trucks , and plenty of welcoming people. We would also take them around the square of Denton to enjoy the historical architecture and several available gourmet restaurant that surround it. Our little college town has so much to offer, we hardly leave town ourselves.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
As the years have passed since we started Skelton Key Crafts we have seen that most encouragement and support has come from our families to encourage to us to never quit. Its tough starting a small business and you find yourself doubting the success of it daily. Our family has been great at supporting us anywhere from showing up to art events to simply sharing social media posts. We couldn’t do it without them!
