Meet Haley Jacobs | Medical Laboratory Scientist, Owner/Operator/Designer- Spurrin’ Scrubs

We had the good fortune of connecting with Haley Jacobs and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Haley, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Hi everyone, my name is Haley, and I am a 26-year-old traveling Medical Laboratory Scientist and proud owner/operator/designer of Spurrin’ Scrubs- “Where Western fashion, meets function.” As a Medical Laboratory Scientist, I am licensed to work in Hematology, Coagulation, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Microbiology, Blood Bank and Transfusion Medicine, Immunology, Serology, Parasitology, and other miscellaneous testing areas. I am very thankful with my degree to be able to work in large or small laboratories- in both animal AND human testing.
Through work and school, I have practiced in both rural communities and large cities in facilities as small as 7 bed Critical Access Hospitals, to 750 bed Level One Trauma Centers. This includes in the states of Ohio, Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, Iowa, Illinois, and Texas. One thing that has followed me wherever my travel and work journeys have taken me, is my personal love for Western fashion and the agriculture industry! These were instilled in me from a very young age, as I grew up showing APHA/AQHA horses, rodeo queening, and being very actively involved in 4-H. Colorado has been my “home base” while off of contract for the previous few years, and I have recently moved back to the Denver area for the next bit of time- where I plan on staying off-contract to focus on scaling this business, spending time with loved ones undergoing treatments, and chasing all things happiness.
In this same transitional time, I have also returned back to the Denver area with a new addition to the local economy-as I have hired on fulfillment/logistic operation assistance, as well as other outsourced assistance. Each scrub top, scrub jacket, scrub pant, and exclusive pattern has been custom created or designed by myself, and after sample runs and approval, manufactured. As well, I try to work with and collaborate with other small business owners in the Western community as much as possible to bring y’all some of the most unique and exclusive items possible!
Not just in Western fashion and clothing items, I have also always had a passion for sharing medicine and science in the rural and urban communities that my travels have taken me. With this business, I am now getting the opportunity to combine all of my largest life passions and interests into one. My life is active and busy, with a lot of science, animals, and traveling thrown into it. My goal is to create products that allow you to do the same- all while keeping you comfortable and confident with the latest Western and “daily wear” trends.
Thank you for being here, I’m excited to show everyone what else is to come!
Haley

Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP)
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
As the sole owner, operator, and designer of all aspects- my entire business, Spurrin’ Scrubs- is something that I take incredible pride in. I saved the funds from my work as a traveler to independently begin this business, and up until recently hiring fulfillment assistance- I have quite literally moved my inventory and all operations across the country alongside myself to my work locations.
Even though I did a few clothing construction projects and had related extracurricular interests growing up, I have never received formal design or fashion based training. This has not stopped me though, and I have taken time to learn about sourcing and manufacturing; custom creating my own blends of fabric, fits, and functionality aspects for all that you see. Additionally taking my own style, color, and design preferences into consideration along the way.
As a medically based student, I also never had any formal business, accounting/finance, tax, retail, law, or even media/marketing related training during my studies. After many late nights of self-taught videos, online searches, and support service calls, I still feel as if I am only making a very small “dent” into this journey. There have been numerous setbacks from a growth standpoint that include a computer data transfer error, banking and booking routing failures, and the trials of hiring on trustworthy assistance. Constantly encouraged by the support of my customers, I never let my operations slow down though.
These items are meant to help instill a feeling of confidence in the workplace, which I have even been able to experience myself! What a blessing it is to be becoming a more diverse individual with these continued learning opportunities, all the while combining some of my greatest life interests and passions. I feel confident that I am being guided by peers in new hired positions that will continue the success and longevity of these designs and business.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One place that you will find me regardless of what state or city my travels take me to- is OUTSIDE! Although I am in and out of the DFW area, I always love to hang-out and listen to live music, grab a bite to eat, and take in all that is to offer.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
A small business that feels anything that way from behind the scenes! To a broad range of not only friends and family, but also complete strangers whom have played a part in this business’ success- THANK YOU!
That includes to my family for letting me wreak havoc around their places for short times, to those who helped tear apart my one bedroom apartment and store inventory to and pack orders all night long together. From those far and wide, I have felt the support and encouragement from customers since the first day of sales. High quality photos and industry lead shoots from Adrianna Junck Photography; along with other creative individual collaborations- have played a crucial role in creating a positive consumer environment, allowing for followers to feel a connection through both products and designs!
A newly hired fulfillment and operations team is to thank behind the scenes for the continued success of customer satisfaction after the checkout process. Financially- my accounting/bookkeeping team not only put in some major work to get items organized for myself to remain as compliant as possible, but has continued to be a support resource for other CFO-for-hire responsibilities and analytics. Additional creative and business insight from BRASE Images, have seamlessly fit into these operations that will continue to grow and develop over time.
Individuals, businesses, or related that have collaborated on products or designs, or given myself continued guidance include: Dakota West Leathers, Blush Out West, Bowling Green State University, the American Society of Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Moose Valley Ranch (WA), CH Jewelry Designs, Sunny K Leathers, Becca Atherton Art, Pistol Rose Creations, Turquoise Hill Silver, the Deserted Dingo, 616 Drip, and various other online/supportive industry professionals.
