We had the good fortune of connecting with Erick Hernandez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Erick, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Growing up I saw my father get up before the sun was up and work until the sun came down. He was a subcontractor for a roofing company. On occasions I would join him during the summer. He hated it. He wanted me to have a better life, live the “American dream”. Get a career so I could have a good “job” in the AC. But I always wanted more than that. I wanted something so great that it would not only provide for me, for my parents, but for my future generations. I wanted to create a business that would work hard as a family, serve our families and turn clients into family. I wanted to be in control of my own company that would serve and protect what everyone works so hard for, their home. Having the roofing experience behind my belt plus all of my dads knowledge, it was just the perfect business for us. Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
E&D Premier Roofing LLC is a family owned and operated roofing company. It was inspired by my dads hard work in the roofing field for more than 30 years and made a reality by myself, my dad, and Daisy. We set pride in treating our customers like our own family. It’s what we envisioned all along, a company that would care for the person first and than the work that was needed. We pride ourselves in educating our customers first before having them make any choices over their roof. Our road hasn’t been as easy as expected, no one taught us how to run a business, sometimes we have had doors shut just because we are minorities. They hear our names, see us walk up, and decline our business. We have learned to respectfully walk away. We have love for the craft of roofing that so many other companies lack. We aren’t in it just for the money, roofing has been my life. It has provided for me since I was a child. I know the labor behind a roof and the gratitude underneath it. And that is what helps us over come those obstacles, we aren’t missing out, they are because we pour our heart and soul into our projects. You become family when we work for you. Our customers can see that and they pass our name along. A huge blessing. There’s thousands of roofing companies in the DFW area, we don’t want to be in that cluster. We want to be more than that.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When in Texas you have to go eat Tex-mex and barbecue! My tops are Matt’s Rancho Martinez (must have Bob Armstrong dip) and I love supporting local so we will have to say Meshacks or Intrinsic BBQ in garland. You must visit the bishop arts district in Oak Cliff, park your car and stroll through the shops, bars and restaurants. A walk around Klyde Warren Park. And to top it off go to the Reunion tower to have the best view over Dallas.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I couldn’t have done it without the encouragement of my fiancé Daisy. Even though this company was an idea I brain stormed over night, literally. She has seen me pour my heart and soul into it. She has celebrated my wins and helped me through my losses. I had the muscle and she brought the brains. She helped me set structure and helped with marketing. We both have seen the struggles of our company alone with no one else to fall back on. She has walked through it all by my side and hasn’t complained yet!
