We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Dunn and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emily, the decisions we make often shape our story in profound ways. What was one of the most difficult decisions you’ve had to make?
One of the toughest choices in my career would probably be learning to say no to jobs that I no longer feel passionate about. Im such a people pleaser so telling someone no was hard! Starting out, like most photographers, I would shoot photos of everything to build that portfolio! But now I can confidently say yes to things I love and specialize in like weddings and boudior.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Success to me is not overnight. Success is constantly showing up and putting the work in, even on days you’re tired. The challenges I’ve faced as a photographer has definitely been trying to make a name for myself when starting out since I was only fifteen at the time I began my journey. A lot of photographers were grown adults who often did not take me seriously. I kept putting my work out there and getting clients. It wasn’t till I was seventeen when I shot my first wedding and things shifted. People noticed I wasn’t just someone with a camera. I was capturing someone’s special day that is once in a lifetime. I was committed to doing this for a long time no matter how long it took. Since that first wedding, I’ve shot over 300 weddings so far and can’t wait for more to come!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite places in Dallas are definitely artsy areas. I would start off by going to the Dallas art museum. I could stay there for hours soaking in all the stories from artists all over. Followed by a delicious lunch at the truck yard and spending time shopping local in bishop arts!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d love to shout out my parents, who are supported me and my career since day one. My biggest fans to this day! I am truly successful because the love and dedication as well as work ethic they instilled in me. Also would like to thank my husband and our two beautiful girls for continuing to go along with my crazy ideas and where my job takes me!
