We had the good fortune of connecting with Emilee Duran and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emilee, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When it came to beginning my own business the main focus of it all was my desire of doing something that made me happy. I had moved up in positions at my job and still felt unsatisfied with myself. I knew I had potential that wasn’t being given the focus it deserved. Opportunity came and went but the only thing missing was taking that leap of faith, and once I did I fell Inlove with the beauty of makeup all over again.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Makeup to me is a form of self expression. Aside from the glitter and the glam that we all love, my work doesn’t just stop there. My makeup is my art; it can be creative, different, bold, and beautiful all in one and I love to see how my work changes depending on my client. My business started off with word of mouth and as time went by I began promoting my love of makeup, created a business account, and always kept an optimistic mindset. It was hard not to compare myself to other makeup artist considering theirs so many surrounding me, but the biggest lesson this journey has taught me is that everyone’s work is differently and that’s what makes me stand out as me. Being a makeup artist to me is so much deeper than just glamming a face, it’s being able to share self love and confidence and theirs no better feeling than knowing that.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
DFW has amazing brunch spots and the list is endless! We’d start the day at yolk, fresh start, or snooze for brunch and mimosas! Then to unwind we’d take a stroll through a local plant nursery like calloways or even stop by a local park for a stroll. The most favorite spots to visit when in town is a local museum for some amazing art or a bar for games and drinks. 7th street in Fort Worth has a strip of fun places to check out for a good time. And to end the day we would go to eat at pluckers, or Buffalo bros or even rodeo goat for a yummy burger.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My journey in the makeup industry wouldn’t have been possible without the support of my mom, sister, and partner. They saw potential in me in the moments where I couldn’t see it in myself. Their constant reminders of the talent they saw upon me is what gave me the confidence to know my worth in the makeup world. Now that confidence comes within me because of them.
