We had the good fortune of connecting with Ekow and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ekow, why did you pursue a creative career?
Well, to be honest, I actually had not really thought about myself ever getting to this point as a d.j, I always had a passion for music but never really thought I would be one to be playing it for people. The only reason I really got into being a d.j. was that my dad was a d.j. I then just started helping him with some gigs here and there when I was younger. Then before I knew it, I was doing some gigs on my own. I started seeing some potential with it so I began putting more focus and effort into it. It was not until I had gotten into college till started understanding the business side of things, and that is when things really started taking off for me. I knew I was going to have to make sacrifices in order to make my business successful. However, I also knew that this is definitely something I could make a career out of if I worked hard enough.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Being a d.j. has really given me the ability and freedom to express my creativity through music and seeing people enjoy it and come together gives me a feeling of fulfillment. I think a big thing that sets me apart is that I have the ability to read any crowd, touch a lot of demographics, cater to diverse crowds, and create an experience, not just an event.
Something that I am most proud of is the growth that I have had as a d.j. being put in many different positions to play many varieties of music. I am also proud of being able to guide and inspire newer d.j.’s in finding their own niche in this industry.
I actually, had not really thought about myself ever getting to this point as a d.j, when I started out. I always had a passion for music but never thought I would be the one playing it for people to vibe and dance to. What really sparked my interest in dj’ing was my dad. He was also a d.j. I would help him with his gigs as far as setting up equipment and him teaching me what to play and how to play it. I would say once I got to college, I knew I wanted to be serious about dj’ing. I hustled to get any gig I could. Whether that be at a bar, college parties, or even weddings. My experiences then have all lead me to where I am today. The biggest growth I have seen has been within this last year. More opportunities knocked at my front door and I didn’t hesitate to take them. I have been blessed to be able to play at some of the most popular spots in the area.
One lesson I have learned is to have a good stable network that I can rely on. I continue to seek advice from veteran d.j.’s that I trust, so I can continue growing in this profession. Another lesson I’ve learned is making sure to take care of myself, mentally and physically. My faith in God is very important in my life and has helped me overcome the stress that can easily come with this type of lifestyle. Exercising and adopting healthy eating habits have improved my endurance as a d.j. immensely, but I am always learning better ways to improve. Some weeks I work Tuesday through Sunday, so keeping a solid workout schedule and eating healthy foods have definitely helped keep me prepared for the nights ahead.
One thing about me is, I try my best to be cultured with the music I play. Regardless of what your background is, I want to make sure you feel connected to the music. I am always going to bring more than just a party, I am going to make it an experience. After hearing me, you’re going to leave saying “wow, I want that that d.j. playing at my next event”.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well first, being that I am a big Dallas Cowboys fan, I would take them to the Cowboys Stadium and to The Star. Regardless if the person visiting me is a fan, it’s definitely something to experience. For some good eats, I would take them to the Trinity Groves or Deep Ellum area since there’s a variety to choose from. You can literally find any type of cuisine in both of those locations. And with Deep Ellum being the hub of the nightlife in Dallas, there plenty of places to get drinks maybe enjoy a night out.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost, I would like to give God the glory because, without him, none of my endeavors would have been possible. I would like to thank my family for being such great motivators, for always encouraging me to maximize my potential, and of course for their undying support. In everything we do, we are gonna have friends that help us through any journey, and I have countless friends that have played a big part in my success. I also have a number of mentors in my life but I owe much of my success to Dj SC, Dj Danny West, Dj Phathead, Dj Dtrain, Dj Pete Mash, and DJP. They were the ones I really looked up to and still do to this day. Someone who has also supported me is my beautiful and talented girlfriend. She is always my voice of reason and if I ever need advice on anything, she is the one I call.
