We had the good fortune of connecting with Devon Deshaun and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Devon, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process when starting my own business was definitely a journey. As a child, I was fortunate enough to see my dad, my grandparents, and even my great grandparents own their own businesses. Since then, I’ve always wanted to follow in their footsteps. I had multiple concepts for a business I wanted to start, but never committed to any. Once I started painting in college I finally realized what I wanted to do. From there, I took the necessary steps to make it happen.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
When it comes to my art, I want to be one of the many voices that represent my culture. How I try to set myself apart from others is through my technique/style. When I first started out painting, I researched multiple artists, and notice a lot of my favorites had a certain style. To the point, you could always tell that is was their work or someone was inspired by them. I then started to define my style so when someone see’s my work, they say “That’s a DevonDeshaun”. The journey has not been the easiest, but I’m blessed to be where I’m at today. It took years to figure out my painting technique, and even more years to get my name out in the city. The most important lesson I’ve learned is to be true to myself, and my work. I want the world to know the messages I’m speaking in my work. Those messages are love, style, unity, and mental health awareness through our community.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
So if a friend ever came to visit me, I would send them to Bishop Arts. I feel like it has all types of vibes for whatever someone is trying to get into. They could start off shopping at multiple places like Centre, Hideaway Vintage, and Jowa. They have great restaurants like Tribal, Vera Cruz, Written by the Seasons, and Emporium Pies. Then they can cap off the night with music and drinks at either, Atlas, Revelers Hall, or Lady Love.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shoutout my community! I’ve been blessed with an amazing support system. From my family, my friends, my people at White Unicorn Agency, and even local artist/mentors like Tramaine Townsend. I wouldn’t be where I’m at today without their love, support, and guidance.
